Martha Sue Cole, 85, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 in Abilene, Texas.
Born in Nashville, on May 25, 1934, Martha was the daughter of the late Norma Gladys (Gibson) and Hubert Douglas Jackson. In 1952 she graduated from high school in Russellville, and received her degree in music education from the University of Miami. She taught at Walnut Hill Elementary in Shreveport, La., for 13 years and three years at Shreveport Christian School. After moving to Abilene in 1999, Martha was a substitute teacher for five years. She was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene.
In 1998 Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Franklin Cole, whom she married on May 12, 1957 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She and Charles had owned and operated Coles Men’s and Boys’ Wear in the Bethel Shopping Center in Russellville from 1963-81.
Martha is survived by her sons, Robert Cole and wife Georgann of Abilene, and James ‘Jimmy’ Cole of Jackson, Tenn.; her daughter, Sharon Cook and husband Dustin of Heflin, La,; her grandchildren, Robyn Cole, Logan Cole and wife Johanna, Robert Acosta, Deirdre Johnson, Braden Cook and Charlene Cook; her great-granddaughter, Hazel Cole; and her cousin, Jennifer Garr.
A graveside service will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville, on Wednesday, Jan, 15, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Summers and Son Funeral Home, which is in charge of local arrangements.
