Nannie Hendricks Gregory, 95, went to be with her Savior at her home on June 16, 2014. She was a Simpson County native, born Dec. 15, 1918 to the late Clemuel Hendricks and Edna Mae Hendricks. She grew up enjoying the outdoors and developing a strong connection to the land.
She was married to the late Wilbur Gregory on Dec. 27, 1936 and they began farm life in Logan County in 1943. They moved to a farm in Todd County, near Guthrie, where they raised their four daughters. At Wilbur’s sudden death at 57, Nannie wanted to remain on the farm, and finally in 1978, she was able to purchase it and continued living in the Civil War era farm house that became the family home place. Through her innovation, hard work, conservative practices and shrewd business decisions, she earned the respect of her family, friends and neighbors. Her spirit and strength enabled her to manage a successful farming operation in a man’s world. But, always modest, she gave credit to the Lord for directing her decisions as she was a faithful church member at Kirkwood Baptist for many years and then at First Baptist Church in Clarksville.
Nannie is survived by her four daughters, Sandra Wallace and Laverne Menees (James), both of Clarksville, Nan Teeter of Nashville and Coleen Shanklin of Elkton; her grandchildren, Janet Brinson (Donald), Jeannine Adair (Tim), Woody Binkley, Jim Menees (Ann), Robert Menees (Stacey), Ellen Symth (Thomas, Ken Shanklin, Wil Shanklin (Leslie) and John Shanklin (Carrie); 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, John Marshall Teeter.
Funeral services for Nannie Hendricks Gregory will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Summers, Kirby and Sanders Funeral Home with Rev. John D. Laida officiating and burial to follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will take place Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the service hour at 2 p.m.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
