For Logan County Litter Abatement, we have the "Trash for Cash" program, where non-profit groups pick up litter along roadsides and receive $100 per mile worked. We had 13 different pickups in 2020; this was less than usual due to Covid-19. While we thank every group that worked for their hard cleanup efforts, we wanted to honor the group that did the most outstanding job above and beyond the call of litter duty.
In 2020, that group was the Logan County High School JROTC.Roughly 40 students in this group picked up KY 3519, the old Lewisburg Road north of Russellville in October last year, in five miles of work getting around 65 bags and a lot of other larger trash items.
The effort is part of the LCHS JROTC’s “Operation Community Cleanup,” including numerous community service projects in Logan County, such as cemetery cleanup, historical marker cleanup, Veteran Support/Assistance, and a community food drive.
Several LCHS students told about their experience picking up litter. Autumn Pierce noted, “The briefing part of the event seemed to be the best part and it was also laid out very well.” Chloe Conn shared, “I learned that the side of the road is where everybody throws their alcohol cans, food bags and water bottles. I thought it was a good experience for our community and our environment.”
Jordan Drake related, “I did have fun talking and seeing friends outside of school.”
Perhaps Earon Hudnall summed it all up saying, “I think that the trash pickup was really good for our community. Even though we were picking up trash, it was still a fun experience.”
For their litter cleanup efforts, it is a privilege to honor the LCHS JROTC.
In addition, a strong runner-up group in 2020 was Givin’ Back, led by Coach Jae Allison. They cleaned Highland Lick Road.
