Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) will host the second annual Hispanic Resource Fair on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 2– 6 p.m. at the Main Campus, 1845 Loop Drive in Bowling Green. The Hispanic Resource Fair is free and open to the community.
With a growing Latino population at SKYCTC, Latino Outreach Specialist Addi Hernandez says that at SKYCTC’s Hispanic Resource fair is an opportunity to bring the community together to improve communication and access to community resources. One of the significant barriers that the local Latino community currently face is knowing whom to go to for help. Additionally, understanding the legal system and accessing medical care can, at times, be impossible for those who do not speak the English language.
Hernandez is working with partner agencies to bring resources and services available to the Hispanic population in the area by organizing the Hispanic Resource Fair. “Our goal is to have vendors of resources around Bowling Green, where providers offer services in Spanish or have somebody who speaks Spanish,” said Hernandez. “This event is meant to help people know where to begin when it comes to accessing important resources.”
Leyda Becker, International Community Liaison for the City of Bowling Green, says, “It really makes it difficult to participate actively in the community and be engaged when the language is a barrier. This will be a great opportunity to improve the quality of life in our community.”
Resources and information will be provided in Spanish by the following agencies: Kentucky Legal Aid, SKY Pediatric Dentistry, Feeding America, U.S. Bank, Bowling Green Neighborhood and Community Services, Warren County Public Library, Kentucky Skills U, WKU Minority Teacher Recruitment Center, Passport Health, Barren River District Health Department, and Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College.
This year’s Hispanic Resource Fair is sponsored by U.S. Bank.
