Lewisburg offering Live Nativity
The Annual Live Nativity in Lewisburg will continue to be a “drive-through” Living Nativity for two nights, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 & 3, from 5-8 p.m, at McKinney Park. It will begin by drivers turning on Stacker Street, going around McKinney Park, and exiting back on to Stacker. There will be a small “take out” meal available or sit-in meal at the United Methodist Church "The message of Jesus is what we want to be the main focus," planners say. The 23rd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held in four locations—in fact, four cities—Thursday between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The sites are Adairville Baptist Church, Auburn Fire Department, Mt. United Pentecostal distributing meal kits
The United Pentecostal Church of Russellville will give away Thanksgiving “meal kits” Sunday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing as long as supplies last. The limit is one kit per family. The kit will include a turkey, boxed potatoes, gravy mix, two cans of green beans, two boxes of mac and cheese, two boxes of stovetop stuffing, and rolls. Delivery is not available. The church is located near the top of Ninth Street hill, 316 East Ninth Street.

As has been the case for decades, the Downtown Russellville Christmas Open House will be held tomorrow afternoon, the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Louisville Central ends great Cougar football season
Visiting Louisville Central took advantage of a rash of Logan County miscues on the way to a 61-19 romp over the Cougars in a Class 4A regional championship game Friday. The Yellowjackets returned a fumble recovery and an interception for long touchdowns and avoided an early tying touchdown reception by Harper Butler because a lineman had gone too far downfield. Additionally, Central running back Cortez Stone, who went into the game as the number three rusher in the state, was unstoppable, piling up over 300 yards and four touchdowns. Davin Yates, Ryan Rayno & JunVontre Dillard scored the Cougar touchdowns, and Kyla Bilyeu kicked the only extra point she tried. The long-anticipated showdown between Logan and Warren East, who had combined for a 23-1 record, isn't going to happen. The Raiders were also beaten Friday.

Tyrone Babb’s son makes news for Ohio State
Proving there's always a Logan County Connection, Kamryn Babb was one of the major sports stories Saturday on ESPN, Fox Sports and Yahoo because of his touchdown catch for second-ranked Ohio State against over-matched Indiana. Babb, who is in his second year as a Buckeyes captain, was one of the top-ranked receivers in the nation coming to Columbus, but he's never gotten to play because of four major knee surgeries. Saturday he not only played but caught the TD pass from C.J. Stroud. "It’s so obvious how much the entire team loves Kam Babb," says the Ohio State podcast. Kam is the son of Logan County Athletic Association Hall of Famer Tyrone Babb, who quarterbacked Coach Steve Eans' 1986 football Cougars to an 8-2 record and led Coach Barry Reed's 1987 basketball Cougars to the regional finals.

Ryan Rayno leads Cougars past Hopkinsville
With Ryan Rayno rushing for 285 yards on 35 carries, the offensive line blocking beautifully for him, and the defense repeatedly stopping short-field opportunities for the Hopkinsville offense, the Logan County Cougars held off visiting Hopkinsville 21-7 Friday to advance to the third round of the Class 4A playoffs for the second year in a row. Rayno scored two touchdowns and Davin Yates another while Kyla Bilyeu kicked all three extra points. DeShawn Payne made two key interceptions deep in Cougar territory. Zane Batten caught four of Yates’ passes. Coach Todd Adler’s team (11-1 and fifth-rated in the state) is expected next week to entertain Louisville Central (8-4, 12th).

Republicans win most local offices in general election
Republicans fared well in the 2022 General Election in Logan County, winning all but one pf the non-contested races and five of their eight races against Democrats. Two Democratic incumbents--the two female countywide office holders--lost their positions. Long-time county coroner Mary Givens was defeated by Logan County Schools administrator/home remodeling expert Ben Kemplin. Also, Brooke Brown Waldrup, who was the latest in a line of Dawsons-Browns who have held that office for decades, lost to Timothy Rainwaters, who has many years of experience in the Warren County PVA office. Other Democrats who won were incumbent Sheriff Stephen Stratton over Dewayne Whittaker and incumbent magistrates Tyler Davenport and Thomas Bouldin. Republican winners in contested races included new jailer Joshua Toomey over Johnny Anderson and magistrates Jamie Goodwin and Chris Wilcutt. Unopposed winners were Circuit Judge Joe Hendricks, District Judge Ken Williams, Judge-executive Phil Baker, County Clerk Stacie Watkins, County Attorney Joe Ross, and magistrates Jason Wade Harper and Ann Churchill Crawford. One race of note found long-time Logan County School Board Chairman Kenny Robertson being defeated by Kyle Wetton. Reelected were Russellville Mayor Mark Stratton and all six incumbent council members.

Chick lifts Logan burning ban
Logan County Judge-Executive Logan Chick announced Monday that he has lifted the burn ban in Logan County because of "improved weather conditions." Although rainfall totals are still far behind normal annual averages, there have been some showers lately in this second prolonged drought of 2022. Burning is still prohibited during the daytime near wooded areas.

Cougars beat AC-S in playoff opener
Exploding out to a 28-0 lead just two plays into the second quarter, the Logan County Cougars overcame a gutty comeback by Allen County-Scottsville and a rash of penalties to win their Class 4A playoffs opener 35-14 at home Friday. Quarterback Davin Yates accounted for four touchdowns, two on the ground and two in the air. The touchdown passes were caught by Dayton Blackford and JunVontre Dillard. The other touchdown was on a Ryan Rayno run. Rayno was credited with well over 100 yards on the ground, but he had several other long runs nullified by teammates' penalties. Hunter Holloway intercepted two Patriot passes, Jack Delaney set up a score on a fumble recovery. Peyton Taylor made himself at home in the AC-S backfield, adding to his sacks total. Kyla Bilyeu kicked all five of her extra point attempts. The Cougars will be at home again next week, this time against Hopkinsville, which came from 17 points down Friday to eliminate Franklin-Simpson.

The Logan County Chamber of Commerce's Annual Membership Breakfast will be held Thursday, Nov. 10, with the meal at 7:30 a.m. and the meeting at 8. It will be held at Logan Memorial Hospital, which is also the sponsor. A review of the Chamber's activities for the year and election of board members will be the agenda.

Cougars double score on Hopkins County Central
The Logan County Cougars ran their overall record to 6-1 and their district record to 2-0 with a 44-21 win over Hopkins County Central Friday. Coach Todd Adler's team led 44-7 when the running clock began. It was the fifth time in the last six games that the Cougars have scored 40 or more points. The Cougars went into the game as the third highest scoring Class 4A team in the state with a 40-points-per-game average.

A.J. Woodard scores 5 TDs in RHS romp over Fulton County
A.J. Woodard scored his fifth touchdown of the game in overtime to lead the Russellville Panthers to a 38-32 district win at Fulton County Friday. Woodard carried the ball 15 times for 127 yards and 4 TD's, and went 65 yards on a pass that was just about a foot short of being another run. Tutu McKeage scored the other TD on a 51-yard run. Nick Woodard caught four passes and the Panther defense forced the Pilots into four turnovers. The win probably means a home playoff game for RHS.

Fulton County ran 40 plays in the first half tonight and visiting Russellville just 15, but the game is tied 12-12 at the half. The Panthers have scored on an 80-yard run by A.J. Woodard and a 51-yarder by Tutu McKeage. The Pilots' touchdowns have come on long drives and short runs. Nick Woodard and Caleb Harper have made key interceptions.

A dedication ceremony for a park dedicated to the late famed musician John Prine will be held Saturday in Muhlenberg County, not far from the Logan County line. The ceremony dedicating John Prine Memorial Park at Rochester Dam will be held at 2 p.m. at Rochester Dam, 100 Boat Ramp Lane, Drakesboro. Journalist C. As Legion moves, new entrance formed for West Industrial Park
For decades, the West Industrial Park near Roy's Bar-B-Que off the 68-80 Bypass has been available for factory sites but underused. Now, LEAD and IDA have obtained land from American Legion Post 29 in the area where the Logan County Fair was held, also for decades. and where the former legion post homes were located. A much more visible and accessible entrance to the park is now being constructed along U.S, 68-80 toward Elkton. Road work will slow down eastbound traffic on "the Hopkinsville Road" this week.

Cougars beat Hopkinsville with second half dominance
After seeing visiting Hopkinsville tie the game at 21-21 early in the second half, the Logan County Cougars scored 28 of the game’s final 35 points to win their district opener 49-28 on Senior Night Friday. Ryan Rayno ran for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns, Davin Yates passed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 87 yards and a score, Kyla Bilyeu kicked all 7 of her extra point attempts, Harper Butler and Zane Batten caught td passes, JunVontre Dillard ran for a score, and Jack Delaney intercepted 2 passes and caught 2 long ones. The 5-1 Cougars are ranked fifth in the state in Class 4A.

Sidewinders band to entertain on Auburn Square
The band Sidewinders will entertain in downtown Auburn this Saturday from 7-10 p.m. The Sidewinder perform different styles of music from Stevie Wonder to The Beatles. Auburn Tourism is sponsoring the free family event. Those attending are encouraged to bring their “chairs and dancing shoes.” Food trailers will be set up.

Russellville Schools honor retired superintendent Jim Young
Jim Young, former Superintendent of Russellville Independent Schools, is being honored Friday with a ceremony to establish September as “Thank You Jim Young Month” in the RISD. The celebration will be held at the Russellville Board of Education Friday after the monthly board meeting. The board is expected to approve the resolution to honor him and his legacy. Jim Young celebrated his 90th birthday this September. The Russellville High School gymnasium is named after him and holds many memories. School District Spokesperson Lisa Rose says, “While serving our school District as its Superintendent and in many other roles, he distinguished himself and this District throughout this community and the Commonwealth. Mr. Young has continued to be a source of wisdom for this district, its staff and students, and even in his retirement, he became the interim superintendent in the early 2000’s while candidates were reviewed. His leadership has been expressed through the worldwide impact of his students for the betterment of humanity.”

Logan’s Engler, Fitzgerald and Forbes qualify for state in golf
Making school history, two Logan County Lady Cougars qualified for the state golf tournament in Owensboro next week by their play in the regional tournament at Rolling Hills Tuesday. Abby-Grace Forbes qualified for the second straight year, shooting 82, which put her in fourth place. Sophomore Emma Fitzgerald claimed the last spot to represent this region at state with a 94. The day before, Fitzgerald's cousin, Braden Engler, qualified for the boys state tournament the day before. Coach Will Rosser says he has been told that this is the first time in team history that two Lady Cougars have qualified for state in the same season.

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP is sponsoring a voter registration event at the Russellville Wal-Mart Supercenter on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 1-4 p.m. Everyone must be registered by Oct. 11 to be able to vote on election day, Nov. 8. Braden Engler qualifies for pair of state golf tournaments
A week after playing in the state Class 2A state golf tournament, Logan County's Braden Engler has qualified for the big one, the KHSAA state golf tournament in all classes. According to Athletic Director Greg Howard, Engler shot a 74 at Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green in the KHSAA regional tournament Monday. That tied him for fourth place and a berth in the state tournament next month in Bowling Green. Allen County-Scottsville's Rafe Blankenship, who finished second in the Class 2A state tournament after his putt lipped out on the second extra hole, was medalist with a 69. Bowling Green High won the team title with a 299, five strokes better than second place Greenwood.

Lady Cougars win Class 2A volleyball state championship
The Logan County Lady Cougars (15-4) are Kentucky Class 2A state volleyball champion, having defeated Louisville Christian Academy (13-3) in the championship game Sunday at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro. Coach Caleb Sheffield's team beat Warren Central and Warren East in the regional tournament. They eliminated previously undefeated Floyd County (13-1) in Friday's state opening round in straight sets, and then won over Taylor County Saturday in four sets. Three seniors were named All-State Tournament, including MVP Kaitlyn Scruggs, regional MVP Caroline Kelley, and Hailey Woods along with junior Whitney Christian and sophomore Aubrey Sears.

Auburn Bank holding Customer Appreciation Day
Auburn Banking Company will hold Customer Appreciation Day this Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Customers had until Tuesday of this week to pick up tickets for the event, which will be held at its Russellville office, 404 Hopkinsville Road. Auburn Bank traces its roots to the 1870s and officially became Auburn Banking Company 93 years ago. For over half a century, the bank's Auburn branch has been located on Main Street, but a new modern building is now under construction in the Sugar Maple area of Auburn just off U.S. 68-80.

Lee Dockins honored for Special Olympics success
One of the highlights of the Linton-Wren Kickoff Classic at Russellville’s Rhea Stadium Friday was the presentation of Hometown Hero designation by Modern Woodmen of America to Lee Dockins. She won the USA Special Olympics gold medal again this year as the best all-round gymnast. For the fifth time over the last 16 years, she has been named to the United States team headed to the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin in 2023. She has previously piled up medals in World Games in Asia, Africa, Europe and Los Angeles. She is the daughter of 1972 RHS graduate Harris Dockins and his wife Sharon.

Cougar offense keeps clicking in win over Franklin-Simpson
Scoring touchdowns on their first six possessions, the Logan County Cougars won 41-31 at Franklin-Simpson to run their record to 4-0 Friday. Davin Yates threw four touchdown passes (two of them to Harper Butler), and Ryan Rayno rushed for two touchdowns that counted (some were called back on penalties). In addition to catching a touchdown pass, Zane Batten intercepted a pass that allowed the Cougars to build a margin, and Kyla Bilyeu kicked two extra points in three tries and drew a roughing-the-kicker penalty on a field goal attempt that kept a TD drive alive. Jack Delaney made some crucial catches, one for a touchdown.

Yates leads Cougars to halftime lead over Wildcats
The Logan County Cougars lead the Wildcats 21-10 at halftime at Franklin. Quarterback Davin Yates is 11 of 12 passing and threw touchdown passes on all three LCHS possessions of the first half. Scoring the touchdowns were Zane Batten, Harper Butler and Jack Delaney. Ryan Rayno had a long run called back on a hold on the Cougars, but still has 52 rushing yards at the intermission. The Wildcats scored on both of their first half possessions but had to settle for a field goal on the first one.

Panthers to face another talented opponent in home opener
As has been the case all season, the Russellville Panthers face a tough opponent tonight in their 84th Rhea Stadium home opener. Warren East leads Class 4A state statistics in three categories: 1st in scoring at 45.3 points per game; 1st in points allowed at 2.3 per game; and 1st in passing defense with 25 yards allowed per game. The young Panthers have played another one of the state’s best 4A teams and two excellent Class 2A squads already. This is the Linton-Wren Kickoff Classic, named after two Panther playing and coaching legends, the late Buddy Linton and Howard Wren. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The call of the game will be recorded and played on WRUS at 1 p.m. Saturday with Chris McGinnis and John Brett Reynolds on the call.

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams is scheduled to be in the Auburn area today. Ashley Holloway’s Cattle Company adds variety to Farmers’ Market
This has been a special season at the Logan County Farmers' Market, with impressive customer turnout and several new vendors. One of them is Ashley Duvall Holloway, who holds degrees in ag science from Murray State University. She and her husband, Jared Holloway, Jared own and operate Holloway Cattle Company. She brings a wide variety of meats to the market, coming from animals raised on their Logan County farm. Holloway Cattle Company will be at the Farmers' Market Saturday from 7:30-noon. It's located behind the Logan County Extension Office.

Jacksons Orchard returns to Russellville for another session
Jacksons Orchard peaches will be available at Fellowship Church of Christ in Russellville across from the old hospital this morning beginning between 11:30 and noon. Owner Bill Jackson had earlier indicated earlier they couldn’t return this year because of the extended drought, but it has rained in recent weeks. Turner Valley Produce will have seedless watermelons, cantaloupes, purple hull peas, squash, candy onions, tomatoes and more.

Baldwins to bring sweet corn to Farmers’ Market
For some limited in number items, customers of the Logan County Farmers' Market should be there about the time it opens at 3 p.m. today. Baldwin Sweet Corn will have some Peaches and Cream ears, but not an abundance. Two weeks ago, they sold out in 17 minutes. Owner Ted Baldwin says this will be their last corn of the season. Blueberries, Cherokee purple tomatoes, okra and shelled peas will be limited at the Turner Valley Produce tables. They will have lots of tomatoes, seedless watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes and squash. The market is located under the pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office. Scheduled closing time is 6 p.m.

Scott Waste Services Operations Manager Ty Bowman has made the following announcement: Due to the recent fire at the Auburn Transfer Station, we will not be open for free dump day this weekend. Med Center Health to conduct school physicals for LCHS & RHS students
From Russellville High School's Lisa Rose: Med Center Health School Based Health Clinics will be available on July 27 and July 28 at the Logan County CTC to provide school physicals to all ages and immunizations for 6th grade and up. Appointments are available from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 270-586-7380 to schedule. Services will be billed to the family's insurance.

Extension Office, Farmers’ Market offers Sweet Summertime Drive Throug
The annual Sweet Summertime Drive Through Event for kids ages preschool through middle school -will be held Tuesday, July 19, from 2:30-4. Families can drive around the Logan County Extension Office during that time and get a bag of goodies, including Fun Bucks to use at the adjacent Logan County Farmers’ Market, which will be open until 6 p.m. In fact, the bucks can be used until market season ends at the end of October.

Gary Gettings named Lady Cougar Softball head coach
In his first major move since returning from retirement, Logan County District Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced the selection of Gary Gettings as the new head coach of Lady Cougar softball. Gettings was a star baseball pitcher and first baseman at Russellville High School and Campbellsville University. He has done a lot of coaching of youth and travel softball teams. He was a leader of the 1988 RHS team which was regional runner-up. The Lady Cougars are coming off an 18-15 season that ended in a 12-iniing, 1-run loss in the regional tournament. The 2022 team had four seniors and two juniors, including Gettings' daughter, star pitcher Shelby Gettings. Several young players were in key roles, including star catcher Emerson McKinnis, who is playing softball all over the nation this summer. Coach Gettings succeeds Mark Wood, who has coached the Lady Cougars since the 2018 season.

1944 WW2 bomber to appear at Russellville-Logan County Airport
Honor Flight Bluegrass sponsored by the Kentucky Veterans Program Trust Fund will bring a 1944 WW2 B-25 Bomber from the Commemorative Air Force in St. Louis to Russellville-Logan Airport on Saturday, July 16. Honor flight will take WW2 veterans in our area on a free flight beginning at 10:30 a.m. The B-25 will arrive at the airport at 9:30 and depart at 2 p.m. Airport Manager Cassie Sobey says, “Please bring your families and come and join us to honor these brave men who should never be forgotten. The local EAA chapter will be grilling hot dogs for a small donation, City Fire will have the American flag flown from their fire appliance and the B-25 will be available for you all to see up close.”

Practice to begin for Cougar Middle School soccer
Practice will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. for 5th-8th grade boys interested in playing Logan County Middle School Soccer. Practices will be held from 8 a.m.-9:30 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings this week at the LCHS field. Players should bring their own water source, cleats and running shoes to each session. Tryouts for the middle school team will be held Monday, July 18, at the same time. Those with questions should contact Noah Bray. Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced he is accepting applications for an assistant high school soccer coach.

Speakers who grew up in Crittenden Drive’s youth program to be VBS speakers
Three of the speakers for the adult class during Crittenden Drive Church of Christ’s VBS July 17-20 will be Nashville area professionals who grew up in VBS and youth activities at Crittenden Drive. The theme is “A Royal Adventure.” After the congregation’s minister, Scott Harp, speaks on King Solomon Sunday, Trevor Coe (son of Marlin and Phyllis Coe) will talk about King Hezekiah on Monday, Jay Baugh (son of Dale and Fran Baugh) King Nebuchadnezzar on Tuesday, and Glenn S. McGehee (son of Dorris McGehee and the late Glenn McGehee) on Jesus King of Kings on Thursday. A meal will be served each evening at 5:30 P.M. with VBS for all ages at 6:30.

Houchens CEO to speak at Chamber’s Men in Business luncheon

Logan Farmers’ Market to offer 4th of July fresh foods
The Logan County Farmers' Market plans a special session Saturday morning featuring fruits and vegetables that will go great in a 4th of July picnic. Ted and Darla Baldwin will have lots of their sweet corn grown on the banks of the Red River. Elaine Turner's Turner Valley Produce will offer cookout essentials such as tomatoes, candy onions and Sweet Gem seedless watermelons, and Kris Partlow and Kelly Hardison will offer tasty breads and desserts. Several other vendors appear in different sessions. The market is located in the pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office. Hours are 7:30-noon.
