Names are more important than games on The Logan Journal. While many of our stories, especially news briefs, deal with sports results, one of the guiding principles in the online publication’s mission is that people are more important than events.
We believe that there are tradeouts for big city vs. small community. More choices of “things to do” or places to eat can be found in metropolises, but for the most part, people rarely get their names publicly written or broadcast unless they commit a crime or are victimized in one. Those living in less populated areas usually have fewer choices, but they become well known through the written and spoken word.
The LoJo is filled with names. In the first half of the fifth year of our existence (Feb. 1-July 31, 2013), the names of 2,921 different people appeared in stories. That’s 366 more than the previous six months.
Not only have almost three thousand people been named, but many of them have appeared in multiple stories. The names of 63 of them were in double-figure articles, and the total reached 128 who were in five or more .To be among the top 25, a person needed to be part of at least 14 stories.
Again, sports figures dominated the totals. More specifically, the regional champion Logan County baseball team dominated. Ten of the top 11 places were occupied by Coach Ethan Meguiar and nine of his Cougars. The top spot went to Mark Abbott, a Logan Aluminum employee whose photographs appeared in 42 stories during that six months. His daughter Maddie is a key softball and volleyball player, and he has documented not only those two teams but many other LCHS sports and events. Now that Ashley Bland no longer lives in Logan County, no such photographer has emerged for Russellville sports recently. The non-sports figure who appeared in the most articles is Gov. Steve Beshear with 11.
Top 25 Overall: Mark Abbott 42, Coach Ethan Meguiar 33, Ryan Basham 31, Dustin Cartas 30; Caleb Bruner, Gage Hales & Matt Harper 27 each, Barrett Croslin 24, Joe Holliday & Cody Hunt 25 each; Ian Woodall 23, Coach Greg Shelton 20, Hunter Britt & Coach Otis Key 19 each; Jordan Kennedy, Thomas Miller, Justin Rone & Coach Phil Todd 15 each; Daniel Beaty, Victoria Cates, Dylan Cole, Blake Gettings, Sye Head, Amber Sydnor & Coach Nathan Thompson 14 each
Leaders in Non-Sports Roles: Gov. Steve Beshear 11, Kim McDaniel & Cong. Ed Whitfield 10 each; Rep. Martha Jane King, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Rand Paul & Dorris Vick 7 each; Commissioner James Comer & Sen. Paul Hornback 6 each; Casey Jaynes, Chris McGinnis, Al Smith & Taylor Tinsley 5 each
The 10 most frequent names beginning with U-Z were as follows: : Ian Woodall 23, Luke Woodall 13, Tyler Wood 12, Ben Wright 12, Congressman Ed Whitfield 10, Adam Wilkins, Clint Wood & Corey Wright 9 each; Jacob Wood 8; Dorris Vick 10
All of those whose name begins with U, V, W, X, Y or Z that can be found in The LoJo during these six months and the stories in which they appeared follow:
