Just as he does with anything else he attempts, Gary Sears has worked at being a good candidate for public office. He hopes voters will allow him the opportunity to demonstrate how good a member of Logan Fiscal Court he can be.
Sears is a candidate for Third District magistrate on Logan Fiscal Court, subject to the May 20 Democratic Primary election.
Gary Sears was the first candidate to file for any Logan County office when the registration period opened in November. He was also the first to advertise his campaign when he began running a banner ad on The Logan Journal in late January. And although there is no way to know for sure, he may well have been the first candidate to start knocking on doors, introducing himself to voters in the Third District. There were many frigid days in February and March when he could be found driving or walking along streets and backroads attempting to meet everyone he wants to serve as magistrate.
He said last week that after completing that mission, he’s going back around for a second visit to as many potential voters as possible.
Generally wherever a fundraiser is underway for some worthwhile organization, Sears can be found, bidding on items, donating items for sale—including some of the pastries he has made, and even cleaning up afterwards.
Gary Sears has been an active community volunteer most of his life. He is or has been a bloodmobile volunteer, a church bus driver, a veterans’ van driver, and a cook for the elderly and those in need. Many times he has stayed with someone who is ill so that the regular caregiver can take a break. He’s also been known for years for sending in to WRUS’ Happy Birthday Club the names of countless people who are celebrating birthdays.
A native Logan Countian, he is a veteran, having served in Vietnam. He is an adtive Baptist.
He’s twice retired from having worked at factories, both at Logan Aluminum and Emerson Electric. He’s still working, though, as a cattle and hay farmer.
He and his wife, the former Carolyn Davenport, are parents of a daughter, Brittany Sears Walker. She is married to Logan County High School graduate Alan Walker. They have given Gary Sears a new title—grandfather of Mattie Lee Walker.
Now he hopes voters will add the title of Third District Magistrate to his name. He promises to work as hard representing them as he has in being a good candidate, a good employee, a good community volunteer, and a good family man.
