Each month the Logan County Board of Education hears/sees a presentation about activities at the various schools and gets Good News Reports from the schools. They learned the following at the September meeting:
Sherrie Pryor, English Language Arts teacher at Chandlers School, introduced 8th grade students Duncan Sandlin, Nathan McDowell, Rachel Price, Gracie Richey and Blake Brady. The students presented information regarding a class they are taking this semester “Change the World” and demonstrated one of their presentations from the class- Job Shadowing.
DISTRICT:
FRYSC had approximately 310 students fitted for new Nike Tennis Shoes through the Rotary Club’s Happy Feet Program. This year, shoes will also be provided for emergency situations during the year.
ADAIRVILLE:
Adairville has started a choir program in the middle school, and fourteen 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have signed up and begun participating.
There was a great turn out for Dads and Kids Pizza Night, in which Dads were recruited to be a part of the Watch D.O.G.S. school volunteer force. Approximately 150 were in attendance.
A very successful Book Fair was held during the week of Sept. 8 with numerous parents and grandparents visiting the Book Fair with their children and grandchildren to purchase books.
AUBURN:
Auburn held a Watch DOGS event on Aug. 21 to promote involvement in the school by students’ dads, uncles, grandfathers, etc.
Auburn Elementary will be recognized at the Southern Obesity Summit in October and KSBA later in the year for its efforts to improve the fitness and health of its students, faculty, staff, parents and community. Auburn offers faculty/staff/parent workout sessions, as well as Moving Minute each morning.
Grades Pre/K – 3rd enjoyed a family Fun and Fit Night on September 9th with approximately 200 participants. Parents and students engaged in activities to increase their knowledge of math and reading with a fitness twist. Four students won scooters as grand prizes: Eli McGinnis, Lindsay Higgs, Linvia Lingerfelt, and Claire Dayton.
Auburn Elementary reached the $100,000 mark in Jump Rope for Heart, thanks to the efforts of Coach and P.E. teacher Josh Hall and the hardworking students at Auburn School.
Auburn’s 8th grade class visited Western KY University on September 12 to increase their knowledge of being college and career ready.
CHANDLERS:
Over 500 community members took part in school activities over a two-day span, with a “Watch DOGS” event Monday night, followed by “Breakfast with Someone Grand” Tuesday morning and a “Family Fun” event that evening.
LEWISBURG:
Lewisburg School held its annual ‘Watch DOGS’ Dads and Kids Pizza Night on Tuesday, Sept. 2. With guest speaker Steven Cross, over 133 dads and kids attended and were introduced to the importance of volunteers in the school. Thirteen new dads signed up to be trained as volunteers, and many others expressed further interest.
On Wednesday, Sept. 17, a ‘Constitution Day’ school-wide assembly was held for grades K-8. Students wrote speeches, performed a play, sang and recognized the importance of the U.S. Constitution. The student-led assembly included dramatizations, speeches, and a choir selection.
Family Fun Night was held on Friday, Sept. 19. Students, families and community members attended in support of the teachers and PTO. The book fair was held in the library, as well, to raise money for new books and resources for students.
OLMSTEAD:
Olmstead’s Fall Festival was held Sept. 5. The Pottery Room, located in Clarksville, Tenn., helped each homeroom create a piece of pottery decorated in some way with each student’s fingerprint. These plates were auctioned at the end of the festival activities that night.
On Sept. 6, a group of staff members, Olmstead parents, and students went to Nashville to participate in the Autism Awareness Walk as part of Team Blake, honoring an Olmstead second grader.
On Sept. 19, Olmstead 8th grade visited Octagon Hall going through the following rotations: Civil War ambulance, Civil War ammunition/cannon, General Robert E. Lee speaker, Civil War singing sisters, and tour of the house which served as a hospital throughout the war. They went on to visit South Union Shaker Museum for a Civil War demonstration and introduction into the Shaker lifestyle and its impact on society.
LCHS:
Congratulations to sophomore Chasity Davidson and senior Ethan Haley. They are the Attendance for Academic Success Contest Winners for August.Several LCHS students competed in the outstanding youth competition at the Logan County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. Wesley Estes, Dru Brown, Zach Brinkley, and Andrew Milam competed for the boys; Ashley Brinkley, Ann Meguiar Bouldin and Lilly Robertson competed for the girls. Lilly Robertson won the girls division, and Wesley Estes won the boys division.
The following students were selected for the new LCHS Goal-Driven Resilient Influential Teens (GRIT) team members to work with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. They will also be serving as Renaissance student advisory council members. Matt Harper, Cole Stanley, Dalton Furlow, Garrison Rosser, Jesse Lashley, Kenton Howard, Ter’Vareus Bowens and Dylan Coonts are the male students; the female students are Addison Steward, Ann-Meguiar Bouldin, Victoria Gipson, Rachel Pitts, Breanna Baptiste, Rachel Cunningham and Sarah Edgar.
So far, LCHS Marching Cougar Band placed well in their three contests. At the Franklin Simpson contest, they received 1st in class AAAA, Best Color Guard Class AAAA and Reserve Grand Champion; at the Butler County contest they received 2nd in Class AAAA and Best Color Guard Class AAAA; at the Russellville contest they received 2nd in Class AAAA and Reserve Grand Champion. The Logan County Home Show will be held Saturday.
LCAS:
Since the beginning of the school year, two students have completed the program, and two more are expected to exit by the end of next week and return to their regular school.
RATC:
Fifty-six (43 LCHS) seniors are identified to attend the Monster.com event with BRADD to launch the in school Academy for Career Excellence on Sept. 25. These students will take part in a cohort for the remainder of the school year to develop leadership and career ready skills through the Academy of Career Excellence.
