When Ann Dorris puts on her basketball jersey, the school colors of blue and white are still the same. What has changed is that the team name on
front of the jersey is Cougars, not Brahmas.
Dorris the new face on the Logan County Lady Cougars basketball team. She transferred to LCHS from Douglas MacArthur High School, San Antonio,
Texas. Even though Dorris may be a new face, her family is hardly new to Logan County.
Her dad, Steve Dorris, is a graduate of Lewisburg High School where he played
for the Lewisburg Rangers.
Her mom, Kim Wilson Dorris, graduated from Olmstead High School and was
a cheerleader for the Rams.
The family moved back to her parents old Kentucky home in November of last
year.
Ann Dorris started playing basketball when she was six years old. She had played her freshman and sophomore years in Texas. When she arrived at
LCHS, the Lady Cougars were already practicing. She said she worked really hard to get a guard position on the Varsity team. Guard is the only position
she has ever played.
Basketball has helped her make the transition to LCHS. In Texas she attended a high school that was three stories, had an enrollment of more than
3,000 students, and was a 5A school. She says one of the best aspects about Logan County is that she actually gets to use her locker and can still get
to class on time.
"When I first got here, I probably didn’t say anything for two weeks," Dorris said. But everyone has been great and playing basketball has made it
a lot easier to make friends.
While in Texas, Dorris was accustomed to playing ball year round with only a month off from the sport. When not playing school ball, athletes had
the opportunity to participate in AAU ball, which kept them playing basketball from February through July. After learning she would not be able to do
that here, she began to entertain thoughts of soccer. She admits she was very disappointed when she learned LCHS does not have a soccer team.
Now, she is considering softball for a spring sport after the basketball season ends.
Dorris says she and her entire family have always been big Kentucky Wildcat fans.
So, the idea of moving to Kentucky was inviting where she would be closer to UK. "The only thing I remember about Kentucky is going to UK games," Ann
says.
Her mom said they always tried to make it to a UK game anytime they were playing within a reasonable distance from San Antonio. One time they
drove to Louisiana to watch the Wildcats play basketball.
Dorris says the Lady Cougars coach, Scot MacAllister, is a great coach. She also enjoys playing basketball with other members of the team as well.
Naturally, she misses the many friends she left behind in Texas, but the Internet helps her to stay in touch. She also has a brother, Jordan, back
in Texas who attends Texas Tech.
College is a definite goal of hers. She’s not exactly sure where she will attend at this time but definitely wants to play basketball wherever she
decides to go.
