Logan County High School freshman Louis Scott, son of Ann and David Scott, has recently been asked to serve as an Advisory Board member for Creative Kids magazine. Creative Kids is a quarterly magazine that has been in publication for over 20 years. It is written by kids and for kids ages 14-18. Each edition features collections of poetry, prose, essays, novellas, artwork, and games. The magazine’s parent company, Prufrock Press, is noted for publishing books, magazines, and research journals that support gifted education.

Only 12 persons serve in the capacity of advisory board member at any given time. Members serve for two year terms and are selected through a rigorous process, including a written recommendation and two work samples.  Members are expected to provide feedback on the design and promotion of the magazine, review books and products for the magazine’s Under Review column, and serve as creative contributors—submitting a minimum of two pieces of work for publication in the magazine or on the magazine’s website. Student Advisory Board members do not select or edit other students’ work.

After having discovered the magazine in seventh grade, Louis has written a few book reviews and submitted puzzles to Creative Kids for publication. He sees writing as a means to serve as both a creative and practical outlet. Recently, he has been discovering writing creatively and looks forward to submitting some of his new stories. His list of favorite authors includes a collection of rather creative writers:  J.R.R. Tolkien, Brian Jacques, C.S. Lewis, H.G. Wells, and Isaac Asimov. His aspiration is to become a microbiologist someday, as he finds studying cells interesting. For now, Louis hopes his involvement with Creative Kids magazine will inspire other LCHS students to write and possibly submit their works to be published.
