Russellville residents Kaye Hendricks and her son John had the privilege of meeting former president Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn on a trip this past summer. They enjoyed a Sunday Service at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter and his wife attend.
After the service, Kaye and John were able to meet the former President and First Lady and have a photo taken with them. They also had the opportunity to tour his childhood home, located on a farm just outside of Carter’s hometown of Plains, Ga.
Kaye and John also visited the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which is housed in Carter’s former high school. The museum chronicles Carter’s childhood in Plains and explains in detail how the grass roots efforts of his hometown in Southern Georgia helped Carter on his path to the White House.
John, a freshman at Logan County High School, said, “It was exciting to meet former President Carter and learn about his childhood and path to presidency.”
Kaye, a teacher at Adairville Elementary, noted, “It was a rare opportunity to get to meet a former president. On our next visit, we hope to attend the Sunday School class that former President Carter still teaches.”
Shortly after their meeting him, President Carter announced that he is battling cancer but will continue to try to help others when he is not taking treatments.
