On November 2-3, the eighth grade class from Lewisburg School visited Murray State University, Brandon Springs Group Center, and The Homeplace. There were 58 students in attendance, along with 14 adult chaperones.
At Murray State, a student ambassador gave students a tour of the campus that included the academic buildings, library, fitness/wellness center, and the Racer gymnasium. They completed thier tour by having lunch at Winslow Cafeteria on campus. Students enjoyed being exposed to college life, even if only for a short time. It is our hope that learning opportunities like this will encourage students to attend college in the future.
Brandon Springs Group Center is a team-building facility that teaches groups to work together to solve problems. Students were divided into groups and participated in three different activities – building a shelter in the woods, orienteering (using a compass and topographical map to find your way), and challenge courses.
Teacher Kelly Hardison said. “It was amazing to watch students who tend to be more timid in the classroom take a leadership role in a different environment.” Students stayed the night in dorm-type accommodations and ate in the cafeteria located on-site.
The Homeplace is an 1850s working farm. While visiting, students were given a tour of the farm and watched many demonstrations that helped them appreciate the innovations we enjoy today. Students saw animals, gardens, tools from the tool shed, typical homes, an actual weaving loom, etc.
“This was an amazing opportunity for our students. They were exposed to college life, participated in activities that taught leadership, and took a walk through history. Many of our students will not have opportunities like this again, so I was honored to be a part of it,” Mrs. Hardison said.
