WKU’s forensics team is hosting a series of performances as part of Black History Month on Feb. 24.
As We Make History: A Black History Performance Symposium will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Downing Student Union Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public; the event is swipeable for WKU students.
Students from WKU’s national champion forensics team will perform poetry, dramatic interpretation, duo interpretation, after-dinner speaking and persuasive speaking to explore a range of issues confronting black Americans.
· Freshman Andrea Ambam of Peculiar, Mo., will perform a humorous speech discussing African immigration.
· Sophomore Durwan Green of Lewisville, Texas, will perform a program of literature discussing the racial empathy gap.
· Senior Tiffany McLarty of Bronx, N.Y., will perform a program of poetry discussing the “race card” or the myth of black privilege.
· Sophomore Lyric Davis of Blue Springs, Mo., will provide a persuasive speech advocating for civil rights literacy in schools.
· Sophomores Curtis Milby of Hodgenville and Allison Williams of Memphis will perform as a duet in a dramatic selection from Memphis: The Musical by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro.
· Senior Haddy Badjie of Lewisville, Texas, will offer a persuasive speech advocating for an intersectional approach to analyzing the school to prison pipeline.
On March 26, the team will host another performance night — the annual WKU Forensics Showcase — in the Gary Ransdell Hall Auditorium before the team leaves for the first of two national tournaments. Admission to that event will be free with the donation of a canned good for charity.
