Although snow has kept us out of the building recently, Auburn School students are still learning in new ways each and every day, through our non-traditional instruction days and extracurricular activities. Here’s a glimpse at what we have to celebrate this month at Auburn!
Fourth through eighth grade students competed in the Auburn School Spelling Bee Feb. 5. Eighth grader Mollie Crawford took first place, with sixth grader Jacob Jackson and fourth grader Alexis Carnal taking second and third places, respectively. Each of these winners advanced to the district spelling bee, to be held at the Logan County Extension Office Feb. 15.
Classroom spelling bee winners include fourth grade students Chloe Hance, Alexis Carnal, Danny Dotson, and Robert Camp; fifth grade students Abbi Reader, Ethan Thompson, and Isaac Stanley; sixth grade students Jacob Jackson, Delaney Phillips, Katie Crump, and Jace Cross; seventh grade students Cassandra Townsend, Eliza Hagens, Brandon Pugh, and Colton Watkins; and eighth grade students Briley Robinson, Mollie Crawford, Mackenzie Anderson, and Michaela Tackett.
Congratulations to Auburn Middle School’s academic team for their hard work at District Governor’s Cup against Drakes Creek, South Warren, and Franklin-Simpson Middle Schools. Auburn took 3rd place overall in the competition, with several students winning individual awards. Mollie Crawford placed 1st in written composition and 3rd in language arts; Sarah Cassady placed 3rd in written composition and 4th in mathematics; Micah Page placed 3rd in arts and humanities and 5th in mathematics; and Henry Ham placed 4th in arts and humanities. They advanced to regional competition in Allen County Feb. 13.
Mrs. Stacy Hughes would like to recognize six additional students who have mastered the Kindergarten Sight Word List: Allison Wyrick, Kendall Noel, Stella Trent, Leah Dukes, Hayden Clark, and Zeke Sturdivant.
Mrs. Chelsea Alexander is proud of the work her second grade class has been doing with their cursive writing lessons. Students are still working our way through the alphabet, but have been practicing writing words with letters learned. The students love cursive writing and are very eager to learn more! They have even been practicing writing their spelling words in cursive on marker boards in classroom. Mrs. Alexander is very proud of their progress and their enthusiasm to learn!
Art work by 5th Grader Andrew Dupree was selected by VSA KY to be featured in its 2016 Exhibit, "A Matter of Perspective". This traveling art exhibit has been hosted at Auburn School and will travel to the State Capital in Frankfort, among other destinations.
Each homeroom teacher has recognized a classroom leader for the month of February that best exemplifies Habit Four: Think Win-Win. Each of these students are an excellent example of working together to find solutions that work for everybody!

Former Auburn students are regular visitors within our school, working with individual students and small groups, as part of Mrs. Alisa Toon’s Child Development class at Logan County High School. LCHS student Quentin Wright is one of those familiar faces around Auburn School! Ms. Georgia Bryson’s fourth grade was excited to have him as part of their science class this week. They enjoyed his help with their volcano experiment!
Is your Auburn student doing something noteworthy or would you like to recognize a staff member at Auburn School? Please send information (photos are also welcome!) to Sarah Hatton at Auburn Elementary School at sarah.hatton@logan.kyschools.us. We would love to recognize as many students and staff as possible in future articles.
