Logan County’s new 4-H and Youth Development Agent brings in a wealth of experience in 4-H work and an impressive resume to her new job.
Carrie Derossett was welcomed with a reception at the Logan County Extension Office Friday, just two days after she worked her final day as beef coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.
A native of Barren County, she is a former state secretary of the Kentucky 4-H Clubs. She earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky.
Her dad, Gary Tilghman, is the retired county agriculture and natural resources agent in Barren County. He and her mom, Pat Tilghman, made the trip from Glasgow to be in Russellville for Carrie’s introduction to the community.
Accompanying them were Carrie and Daryl Derossett’s infant son, Tillman Derossett. He slept peacefully in his carrier most of the first hour of the reception. His dad was working at Burkman’s Feeds in Barren County and couldn’t make the trip.
One of the first to arrive for the event was former Logan County Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent Chris Milam. He gives high praise to Derossett, having just returned from the state fair where Carrie oversaw the beef shows.
Milam’s sons were among the big winners there, showing their Limousin breed of cattle. Andrew, a senior at Logan County High School, won the state championship in pairs (cow and calf) while Zach, an LCHS sophomore, won the purple in the bull division.
Those who remember how much activity and competition were on display among Logan County 4-Her’s years ago are hoping that level of participation will return under Carrie Derossett’s leadership and that Logan County youngsters will be sending many exhibits to the state fair in Cloverville in addition to the livestock arenas.
Among those greeting her Friday were fellow UK Logan County Extension employees, including Ag and Natural Resources Agent Leann Martin, Health and Consumer Sciences Agent Rachel Hance, SNAP-Ed Assistant Paige Alexander, and Linda Martin, who is the face of the office when people need assistance.
Logan County Judge-Executive Logan Chick also welcomed her.
