Over the past 19 years, the Logan County High School chapters of FCCLA and FFA have partnered with the school’s student body to collect canned food items. To date, more than 90,000 canned food items have been collected.
Each year, collected items are donated to the local Good Samaritan and Carrico Center organizations to provide food for Logan County families who could use some assistance during the holiday season. This year’s goal was 5,000 cans.
To help meet this lofty goal, a competition was held between classes to see which class could collect the most canned food items. For a second straight year, Mr. Ryan Bailey’s class was the competition’s top collector. At the drive’s conclusion, 6,300 cans of food and 300 pounds of fruit were loaded onto pickup trucks and delivered to the cooperating help organizations.
If the school can maintain this collection rate, the 100,000 can threshold should be surpassed next year.
FFA Senior Chaplain Evan Hughes commented, “This project allows the whole school a chance to work together for the betterment of our community. It’s exciting to know that we have helped to give local families a better holiday season.”
