Elementary students at Chandler’s School are enjoying a new extracurricular opportunity this year. Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade have the opportunity to participate in the Innovator’s Club each Wednesday after school. The club offers students the chance to explore various projects and activities in the science, technology and engineering fields.
Sponsors Holly Carpenter, Brianna Hopkins and Marty White started the club as a way to offer an outlet for students to explore their creativity and curiosity. Sponsors are collaborating with the Logan County Extension Office to help with supplies and resources.
In the first few club meetings, 70 to 80 elementary students have been in attendance. Students have created x-rays of their hands, built boats that defy weight and are planning to build rockets. The students’ products are displayed in the school lobby for parents and students to view. The number of students participating continues to increase as word spreads about the club.
In the past year, Chandler’s School has developed a profile that outlines the skills that students need in order to be successful. Those skills include collaboration, personal responsibility, communication, critical thinking/problem solving, self-direction and accountability. The activities that students participate in as part of the Innovator’s Club help students develop these desired skills, even while the students are having fun.
