It was a daunting task to create a first day of school celebration that would benefit the students as well as get them excited to be spending part of July in a school building, but once again the Logan County High School administration met the challenge.
Like last year, students literally received the “red carpet treatment” upon arrival. While last year’s students received a rock band greeting as they entered the school, this year there was a rock star (so to speak) Cameron Mills, former University of Kentucky basketball player and now a motivational speaker.
Mills, owner of two NCAA championship rings, did not spend much time talking about his basketball career. Rather, he directed his talk towards the life lessons he learned prior to and since his time at UK. He challenged students to make the most of their high school lives and be aware that others are watching many of the decisions they make. He spoke about missed opportunities and how easy very meaningful moments can go unrealized if we don’t make the effort to leave our zones of comfort.
Mills challenged students to go out and enjoy their high school years, while at the same time be conscious as to how our decisions today may play out in the future.
The occasion was also used as an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments many students made over the summer. Accomplishments recognized are as follows: Eagle Scout – Riley Wharton; Students passing AP testing- Paul Addison, Bre Baptiste, Brooke Barnes, Rachel Barnett, Abby Beachy, Paige Brown, Jacob Burton, Dylan Byrum, Brittany Carter, Ellis Chase, Caleb Cline, Jessica Dukes, Holly Foster, Kaitlyn Foster, Daniel Franklin, Samuel Harper, Brilee Harris, Korbin Holloman, Elizabeth Hughes, Madison Jernigan, Hunter Johnson, Meredith Johnson, Easton may, Connor McColpin, Grace McLellan, Sarah Miller, Ryan Orndorff, Desirae Powell, Isaiah Price, Kendra Proctor, Jessalyn Robey, Garrison Rosser, Gavin Scruggs, Mercedes Sharp, Curtis Shelton, Elizabeth Vanzee, Kellie Warden, Alexis Watkins, Audrey Wells, Austin Yewell; FFA Top 10% Leadership Awards- William Bagby, Blake Taylor, Kenton Howard, Dru Brown; FFA Top 3% Awards- Morgan Hunt, Dylan Wilson; WKU Agriculture Asset Participants- Morgan Hunt, Kenton Howard, Abby Arnold; FFA State Waterball Champs Week 5- Kenton Howard, Dalton Nash, Andrew Milam, Blake Taylor, Jack Wright; JROTC attendance to KY Girls State at Cumberland College- Addison Stewart; DECA outstanding member Region 2- Brianna Winn; and FBLA National Competition for Introduction to Business at Chicago- Isaiah Price.
