Auburn Elementary School is excited to be almost a month into the school year, with new learning and opportunities happening every day, both in and out of school.

Mrs. Brandi Powell reports that her kindergarten students are transitioning well to the school day and are quickly becoming leaders in our school! Mrs. Stephanie Wheeldon’s first grade class is also off to a great start. She would like to specifically recognize Collin Jackson, who can read and spell all of his number words, 1-10, and Lucas Cross, who is already being an outstanding leader. Congratulations go to seventh grade student Eliza Hagens, who qualified for LCHS’s varsity cross country team as a seventh grade student.

Members of the Auburn Volleyball A-team recently took first place at the 2015 Summer SlamFest Invitational Silver Tournament at South Warren Middle School. A-team members include eighth graders Ashlynn Canler, Sarah Cassady, Elizabeth McGinnis, and Briley Robinson and seventh graders Lindsey Malott, Nevaeh DeArmond, Destiny Graves, and Katie Fitzgerald.

In addition to a great start at school, several Auburn students have successes to celebrate from this summer. Eighth grader Abby Canler, seventh graders Brooke Johnson and Kaylin Page, and sixth grader Selynna Metcalfe, all made the Logan County Middle School softball. The artworks of Colby Snoddy and Rosie Kershenski, former eighth grade students at Auburn, were on display last week at the Veterans Stand Down event in Bowling Green. Both students won first place ribbons in their divisions of the Veterans Appreciation Art Contest. Rosie has donated her art to the Kentucky Armory to hang in their facilities.

Auburn Middle School students are excited about the opportunities presented to them through enrichment opportunities presented to them through enrichment and related arts classes. During the enrichment period, students who meet proficiency benchmarks in mathematics and reading select a semester-long enrichment course.

From studying multiple foreign languages through interactive Rosetta Stone software, to practicing and performing short dramas in theatre class, to developing and utilizing technology applications in the Student Technology Leadership Program, to researching and writing legislative bills for the Kentucky Youth Assembly conference in November, to exploring science with hands-on experiments, to learning about and tending to the school grounds in agriculture, Auburn students have multiple avenues of personal interest to explore.

Additionally, all students have the opportunity to select an arts focus for their related arts period. Choices range from singing with the school’s choir, creating advanced artwork as part of the art academy, or studying a little of everything – from aerodynamics by building rockets to nutrition by making smoothies – with hands-on projects in the library’s Wonder Club.

Author Ronda Friend recently visited the school on Tuesday, Aug. 18, to share memorable magical moments with every student in grades kindergarten to fifth, through stories, songs, and drama. Ms. Friend also shared in a writing workshop with 8th grade students who are members of Auburn’s Wonder Club library enrichment class.

That evening, Ms. Friend presented a program to over 200 Auburn students, parents, and family members. Each student who came to the program was encouraged to be part of the play, “P.U., You Stink”, based on Ms. Friend’s book of the same title. Mrs. Holli Waltrip, Mrs. Hope Strode, and Mrs. Sarah Hatton took the role of the three evil foxes who got what they deserved in the end. Refreshments of milk and cookies followed the program, along with door prizes of Ms. Friend’s books. Families were also able to purchase Ms. Friend’s books at the program, and have them autographed by the author.

Auburn looks forward to hosting more author events in the future.

Is your Auburn student doing something noteworthy? Please send information (photos are also welcome!) to Sarah Hatton at Auburn Elementary School at sarah.hatton@logan.kyschools.us. We would love to recognize as many students as possible in future articles.
