The biggest gift you can give a child is the gift of time. School volunteers are doing just that, by volunteering year-round to enhance the culture of Auburn Elementary School, through the coordination of the Family Resource and Youth Service Center (FRYSC).
The mission of the FRYSC is to help academically at-risk students succeed in school by helping to minimize or eliminate non-cognitive barriers to learning. Volunteers assist us in addressing these barriers to learning in multiple ways throughout the school year. From welcoming and social support activities for newcomers, to assisting students in the classroom, to helping school staff with before and after school recreational, enrichment, and tutorial programs, and to providing general assistance to staff related to the countless everyday tasks that must be done, volunteers are crucial to the day-to-day success of Auburn Elementary School.
Auburn School volunteers logged over 420 hours last year through multiple volunteer opportunities: WatchD.O.G.s, student mentors, weekly Backpack Food program, classroom helpers, tutoring, and the list goes on. We would like to spotlight several of those volunteers today, and in the future.
Chelsea Alexander’s and Georgia Bryson’s classes love their visits from Jennifer Higgins once a week. She gives students their weekly fluency assessments. The students love reading their passages to her! She also makes copies for the classroom. She is a wonderful help and both classes are very thankful to have her!
Martha Davis, a retired counselor from the Logan County School System, is now putting on a "volunteer" cap at Auburn School. Mrs. Davis comes every Friday, and copies work for the entire fourth grade, teachers Jamie Metcalfe, Elizabeth Dye, Cindy Beason, and Ms. Bryson. As a former counselor and speech therapist, Mrs. Davis also mentors children of all ages at Auburn. Teachers of various grade levels have requested her counseling/ speech/ mentoring services since she began volunteering at Auburn several years ago. The fourth-grade teachers would like to greatly thank Mrs. Davis for her dedication to servicing the students of Auburn!
Auburn’s front office is blessed to have Rosemary Miller volunteering on a regular basis, greeting visitors with a smile, answering the telephone, and helping the front office to run smoothly. We are so thankful for the time she invests in helping Auburn Elementary School to be such an inviting place to be!

The FRYSC will host a monthly Volunteer Day the second Wednesday of the month starting Nov. 11. On this day you can come in to volunteer all day or an hour, whatever time you have. Family Resource will give you a lunch voucher so you can eat with your student. We look forward to seeing our valued volunteers at Auburn!
