LCHS students earn prestigious honors for this summer
Governor’s Scholars Program
Logan County High School students Will Bingham, Ann-Meguiar Bouldin, and Matthew Edgar will participate in the 2016 Governor’s Scholars Program this summer.
The Governor’s Scholars program is a nationally recognized five-week summer residency program which offers outstanding high school juniors the opportunity to study and interact with faculty members from three of Kentucky’s colleges. Scholars balance a busy academic schedule in the sciences, mathematics, and humanities with a variety of co-curricular activities and a rich residential life on campus. They participate in community projects, seminars, and other activities that are often initiated by the students themselves.
A statewide selection committee chose participates for the program from nominations submitted from each Kentucky school district. LCHS was allowed to submit nine nominations and six of our students were chosen to participate. Selection criteria included academic records and test scores, teacher recommendations, extracurricular activities, and essays. The program is free to those who attend. Depending on the college the student chooses to attend after high school, each participate could get all of his or her tuition paid for through this program.
Will is the son of Billy and Melodie Bingham. Ann-Meguiar is the daughter of Thomas and Lori Bouldin. Matthew is the son of Mark and Claire Edgar.
Murray State University Commonwealth Honors Academy
Logan County High School student, Kaitlyn Foster, will participate in the 2016 MSU Commonwealth Honors Academy.
The Commonwealth Honors Academy (CHA) is an exciting, challenging three-week academic, social and personal growth program for outstanding high school students who have completed their junior year. Students have been selected from the Commonwealth and surrounding region.
Upon successful completion of the Academy, students will:receive six hours of university credit, have the opportunity to take six hours of university courses at Murray State University during the subsequent academic year, and be awarded a four-year, renewable $2,000 on-campus housing scholarship to attend Murray State University.
The Academy provides students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to share the joy of discovery and to exchange ideas in a warm community atmosphere. Supportive secondary and university faculty chosen from the region work closely with the students in classes, seminars, and extracurricular activities. Outstanding college men and women serve as residential counselors to provide leadership, friendship, and encouragement to the students. Exceptional speakers, performers, films, interesting field trips, special events and recreational experiences offer students an array of stimulating activities that provide fun and enjoyment, as well as learning opportunities.
Kaitlyn is the daughter of Michael and Sandra Foster.
Engineering Experience at MIT (E2@MIT)
Logan County High School student Isiaha Price will participate in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineering Experience this summer.
E2@MIT will provide students with a one-week, residential, summer enrichment program. During this time, students will complete a short project course in a science or engineering discipline. In addition, students will attend sessions on financial aid and college admissions, tour labs, meet MIT faculty and staff, students and alumni, and participate in social events.
MIT is one of the most prestigious colleges in the United States. It is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Ranked #7 overall according to the US News and World Reports on Education, MIT is among the top rankings with Princeton, Harvard and Yale. They are ranked #1 for Undergraduate Engineering Programs and #2 in Business Undergraduate Degree Programs.
Isiaha is the son of Iris Price.
Pennyrile Electric Youth Tour
Logan County High School student Coleman White joined other students from across Kentucky and visited the commonwealth's capitol as part of the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperative's Frankfort Youth Tour on April 27. The program brought together students selected from their local electric cooperatives to tour Frankfort and learn about state government.
During the day-long program, students toured the state capitol building, the Governor’s mansion and the Kentucky Vietnam Memorial. Students met with Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes in the Capitol Annex building. They also heard a presentation and Representative Brian Linder, Kentucky House of Representatives.
More than 1,500 students from all across America will take part in the Youth Tour experience each year. This summer Coleman will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., where he will meet U.S. representatives and senators. This unique trip will give him the opportunity to watch history come alive as he explores the museums, memorials and monuments with students from all across the United States.
Coleman is the son of Brian and Carolyn White.
