RHS Principal pays tribute to departing Coach Myers

RJSHS will be on Christmas Break from Monday, Dec. 18 through Monday, Jan. 1. Classes will resume Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Coach John Myers Steps Down – On Saturday, Football Coach John Myers stepped down to take a position in the Central Office of Glasgow schools. Coach Myers leaves behind quite the legacy as the leader of the Panther football program.

Taking over in 2004, Myers inherited the proud football program in the midst of a 10-year drought that had seen just one winning season. After posting a 4-7 in his first season, Myers would propel the Panthers forward and never look back. Four times he led Russellville to 10+ win seasons and in 2015 and 2016, the Panthers won the Regional championship and advanced to the State Semifinals.

Coach Myers’ teams were always known for their gritty run-first style of football and in 2015, the Panthers rushed for 4,926 yards, the tenth highest total for any team in the history of Kentucky High School football.

But Coach Myers’ contributions to the community of Russellville cannot be measured in yards or wins and losses. Coach Myers’ greatest contribution to this community was himself. A pillar of moral character and values, Coach Myers was never without a smile or a good word to say to all. His passion for the game and for the players that he coached came through in every conversation, handshake, or pat on the back.

His devotion to Russellville schools was second to none and for 14 years, he gave the Panther Nation all that he had.

Coach Myers will be greatly missed and Russellville cannot thank him for leaving behind a program that is in tremendous shape and a legacy that sets the bar as high as any in Kentucky.

The high school will begin its coaching search immediately and hope to have a new coach named by February.
