Drills Week
Working with the Russellville Police Department, RJSHS will do a Lockdown Drill this Thursday during a student transition time. This drill will be done to simulate a lockdown procedure at a time in which students are not already in classrooms. Additionally, students will be participating in an earthquake and severe weather drills this week.
Star Testing this Week
It’s been some time now but it’s STAR testing week again at RMS and RHS. Students will take the STAR test for both Reading and Math. These tests are designed to allow the school to continually track student progress through a universal data based set of points, by which students may be identified for intervention services to assist their progress in Reading and Math. Students will test Monday through Thursday at different times based on grade levels. A study of STAR test scores from the previous years when compared with student KPREP scores has shown a strong correlation between student success on the KPREP and the STAR test.
Homecoming
Friday Night was Homecoming and it was a full day of basketball success and dancing! Kicking off the festivities was a Faculty v. Student basketball game during a pep rally at the end of the school day. The elders triumphed over the students in a fun game in front of a loud and excited crowd. That evening, the Boys and Girls basketball teams both won their matchup against Franklin- Simpson High School.
The night’s basketball action took a break as Sr. Akeem Dukes was named Homecoming King and Sr. Lexie Day was named Homecoming Queen. Following the game, students danced the night away in the foyer of the school at the Basketball Homecoming Dance, put on by the RHS Cheerleaders. A special thanks to 8th Grade English teacher Heather Osborne for all the hard work and organization she and the Pep Clubs of RHS and RMS put into the week’s events!
RISD Heads to Frankfort to lobby for Education
On Thursday of this past week, members of the RISD traveled to Frankfort to meet with state reps Whitney Westerfield and Jason Petrie. The team from Russellville included School Board Member Davonna Page, Superintendent Bart Fleener, Principals Ben Bruni and Robin Cornelius, District Instructional Coach Cassie Reding, and teachers Corey Waters (RJSHS) and Sherry Bouldin (SES). The group met with legislators for over an hour and covered topics that ranged from School Choice, to Dual Credit support, to Revenue Generating.
One topic of particular note with the proposal for House Bill 242 that proposed a consolidation of KY’s School District into 55 total districts. Both Westerfield and Petrie did not regard the Bill as one that would get any traction or support in the House. The team also visited Frankfort High School to see some of the innovative ideas taking place at that school.
