Feb. 26 – RISD will be in school

Monday, Feb. 26, originally designated a no-school day has been changed to an in-school day as a make-up day for snow. Several more days will be approved as make-up days as well during the Feb. 19 board meeting.

Taking Extra Safety Measures

The RJSHS Faculty met with members of the Russellville Police Department to discuss school safety as well as procedures and scenarios for lockdowns, threatening intruders, and other situations during a school day. The entire school then participated in a school-wide lockdown drill supervised by Officer Kenneth Edmonds and done during a class transition time to simulate less-than-optimal timing for the drill. Students, faculty, and staff performed excellently and moved with urgency during the drill, displaying an understanding of knowledge of the steps to take in such a situation.

Matthew Wilkerson Earns Prestigious Interviews

Russellville High School sophomore Matthew Wilkerson has earned a chance to interview for admittance to BOTH the prestigious Gatton Academy at WKU and the equally sought after Craft Academy at Morehead State. Both schools place a high level of emphasis on Science and Math and are regarded as two of America’s top preparatory schools in these areas. Mathew’s brother Phillip, a senior, as well as junior Anna Shoulders, are both already at the Gatton Academy.

Academic Team Headed to State!

Parents make Fundraiser a Success

Parents, friends, and several community members all came together to make last Friday nights Senior Night game against Todd County a huge fundraising success! Donations from multiple sources helped RHS Athletics raise considerable funds for improvements and upgrades to the school’s weightroom as well as equipment needs. For many, it was a chance to get some face-to-face time with new football Head Coach Mikie Benton as well as with Superintendent Bart Flener.

ACT Blitz Prep Begins this Week!

Beginning this week, through the diligent organizational efforts of Ms. Bethanie Hargett-Slack, all Juniors will begin a four week, 45 minute-a-day rotation of ACT Prep work. Students will rotate as groups through a battery of English, Reading, Science, and Math prep blitzes that will focus on ACT test taking strategies and skills. Mrs. Lauren Fynboe, Mr. Jeremy Bivins, Mr. Robert McLellan, Mr. Steven McGhee, and Ms. Hargett-Slack will all be working closely with all juniors during this month long concentrated effort.

Opera comes to Russellville

RJSHS Art teacher Chris Holloman introduced his classes to another form of artistic expression this past Thursday when he was able to welcome Opera Singer Angela Fagella. Ms. Fagella visited the Arts and Humanities Class and sang a few Arias from Mozarts' operas. Mr. Holloman’s class was finishing up a unit on music and had looked at the film Amadeus while studying his music, making this opportunity a wonderful fit. The singer spoke with the class about her educational experiences and classical vocal training.  Mr. Holloman was able to meet Angela Tuesday night at the Russellville Arts Council meeting, which Angela is planning to work with to offer additional musical and vocal opportunities in our community.

Upcoming Middle School Dance

March 2 from 6 to 8 p.m., Russellville Middle will host a Spring Fling Dance for all students in grades 6-8. The dance will be held in the RHS foyer and will feature music, a selfie station, concessions, and other fun activities. The dance will serve as a fundraiser for rewards and field trips for the middle school team.

Keep Those Bottle Tops!

The RJSHS Family Resource Center needs your help! They are asking that you please save your bottle caps from all Coke products and turn them in to Mrs. Debbie Browder at RHS. These will go a long way in helping with what appear to be deep budget cuts to the FRYSC by the most recently proposed state budget. Tops may be dropped off at the front office.
