April 12, 13, and 14th waste tire collection days are returning to Logan County. Formerly called tire amnesty, the event is held every three years at the State Highway Facility at 1203 Nashville Street in Russellville for residents to turn in their old vehicle and farm tires for free.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 8 to noon on Saturday.
Tire collection has been popular in the past. In April 2015, the last time the event was held, the county took in 30,528 tires. That was one of the largest numbers in this whole region of the state.
We can't take tires with large beads (the inside edge of the tire that connects to the wheel) over 1 and 3/4 inches, solid/filled tires, tracks, and large off-the-road tires. Also, we can't have tire and tire recycling businesses or out-of-state tires.
A major problem has been that Tennessee residents come, but we just don't have the room or ability to take their tires. Also, all other neighboring Kentucky counties are having a tire collection this year also, and we really want those residents to take tires to their county's collection days.
Recycling tires is a great way to make the county look better, as well as help the environment. Old tires can be an eyesore, serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and be a home to other pest animals. But if recycled, old tires can be made into new tires, fuel, athletic tracks, and playground surface, among other things.
Progress has been made on tire recycling. In 2015, 246 million tires were scrapped in the US, but around 88 percent of those tires were recycled into something else. The number of tires illegally stockpiled in the US is about one-third what it was in 1994.
