Thursday the 20th, all across Kentucky schools will take special note of their attendance figures. Thursday marks High Attendance Day in Kentucky, a day in which all schools focus in on their Average Daily Attendance (ADA), a figure that is critical to school funding. The State Funding allocations system uses a school’s ADA as one of the major determining factors when distributing funding for schools and school districts. RJSHS has averaged a daily attendance of about 95% this year….how close to 100 percent can we come on Thursday!   

STAR Progress Monitoring this Week

All students who have scored below Proficient will be Progress Monitoring testing this week for STAR Reading and Math. Students will take these tests during their Math and ELA classes from Tuesday through Thursday in grades 6-11. In order for students to move up a category in STAR, they must perform at a higher level on TWO consecutive STAR tests (Benchmark and/or Progress Monitoring). All students were giving copies of their STAR Benchmark scores two weeks ago.  

Show of Bands

Bands from all over Southcentral Kentucky descended upon Rhea Stadium on Saturday night for the Show of Bands hosted by the RJSHS Band. The highlight of the night was the appearance of the Murray State Racer Marching Band, a nationally recognized band, who shook the house with several numbers. It was a homecoming for several of last year’s Panther Band members and a tremendous all around event put on by Band Director Brian Brown and his Assistant Director, Trevor Cardwell.

Parent Teacher Night Success

Over 100 student parents showed up at RJSHS to meet with teachers and talk about first quarter progress this past week.

Ambassadors

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the RHS Ambassadors will have their first meeting where leads will outline the overall goals and plans for tvicky he 2018-2019 school year. The applications are available in Ms. Jesse Nugent and Ms. Mathis’s rooms. They are looking for any interested student to fill out an application in order to provide a variety of choices for the new class of Ambassadors. Participation in this distinguished organization would not only look great on a college application, but it builds character as well. Becoming an Ambassador helps students gain skills to become better leaders long after they leave RHS. If current Ambassadors are not able to make the meeting they should inform Ms. Nugent, who has assured all interested parties that this is a meeting you do not want to miss.

Student Government

The first meeting for student government was held on Friday, Sept. 14. This was the first opportunity for the 2018-2019 officers to meet and discuss the upcoming school year. The advisors for student government are Mr. Robby Mclellan and Mrs. Jennifer Rogers. The meeting began with a calling to order by Senior Jacob Naylor. Naylor led the meeting because all senior class officers are the officers for the whole student body. The meeting consisted of officers, such as the class representatives, being appointed to different committees.

Student government will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, during second period in the science lab. The next meeting will continue with appointing officers to a variety of committees. If any student has a concern regarding the school, they should speak with a class officer, who will then bring it to the attention of the student government.

Sports Happenings

 Soccer Wins All “A” Region Champship

On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Russellville Panthers beat Clinton County in the Class “A” region championship. Panthers jumped off to a quick lead, and held the lead throughout. Dustin Brown, Milo Brooks, Avery Flener, and Hunter McDowell were the night’s big scorers. McDowell helped with two goals to clinch the win.

This is a tremendous win for the Panthers, who clinched their first soccer regional championship win in school history. This is a huge accomplishment for an underdog Panther team. They fell 8-0 to Owensboro Catholic in a Kentucky State sectional game in Clinton County Saturday. The Panthers are now sitting at a 7-4-1 record on the year.

Artist of the Week: Iveri Whitmer

It is said that every child is an artist, and the problem of art is staying persistent long enough to be an artist as an adult as well. On Aug. 30, the Paw Print had the privilege of interviewing an up and coming student artist Iveri Whitmer, a junior here from RVK, delivered her wise words upon the subjects of art, art style, and perseverance in your individuality and practice.

What got you into art?

I always liked the fact of drawing stuff, and (I) find a lot of things very beautiful. Like, I just look at the sky and think of how I want to paint that.

How would you describe your art style in three words?

That’s a good question. I would say non-realistic, beginner, and a bit messy?

What is one thing that was a challenge for you in terms of your art?

I think it’s really challenging to draw something without a reference and just… art.

And when exactly do you think you began seriously doing art?

 I’d say about freshman year.

What is the piece of art you are most proud of?

Well, I did this Chip painting that was my first time with watercolors, so I am pretty proud of it and I think it turned out good.

To you, what is the most important part about art?

Making it your own. Having your own twist in it, putting all your emotions in it. I feel like if you’re going to make art, you have to make it different from everyone else’s so it has character.

What is one goal you have for your art?

I want to improve it overall and work harder on just drawing stuff off my head rather than using references.

What is the biggest inspiration you have for your art?

I like the Renaissance arts. I love how it has so much detail with how far back it was. It’s just amazing.

What is one art platform or style you’d like to dive into someday?

I would like to try my hand at graphic design.

And do you intend on pursuing a career in that field?

Yes, I do actually want to be a graphic designer one day.

Do you have any advice you’d like to give to aspiring artists?

Don’t give up. Keep trying, be persistent, and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams.
