Russellville, BGH win lopsided games here Friday

The Courier-Journal's Litratings favored Bowling Green High by 104 points this week, and they were both in Russellville Friday. They didn't play each other, however. RHS was favored by 31 over Fulton but romped 60-6. BGH, which is ranked first in Class 5A and second overall in the state, was favored by 77 over Logan County and won by 69, 76-7. Both were district games.

Tobacco Festival begins 8-day run Saturday
A full day of activities Saturday, Oct. 1 begins the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival with the theme "Small Towns, Big Heroes." Today's events include the Jesse James 5K Run & Walk (late registration ends at 7:15 a.m.), the Golf Scramble at Rolling Hills at 7:30, the Road Rally at 10 a,m,, the Kiddie Parade at 11 a.m., Kiddie Fun & Games after the parade, the Little Mr. & Miss Contest at 1 p.m., and Hometown History Day at historic Diamond Springs in North Logan. Roy Mosier pictured on cover of Kentucky Living
Retired Russellville educator Roy Mosier is pictured on the cover of the October issue of Kentucky Living magazine with some of his friends--dollar bills. The magazine, a service of Kentucky's electric cooperatives, explains that Mosier and his wife Ann had an energy checkup, made needed changes to save money and also received a sizable rebate. A photographer himself, Mosier was caught on film by one of the state's best, Joe Imel.

Donna Gholson retiring from R'ville schools
Donna Gholson
, who heads local community education and is in charge of public relations for the Russellville schools, plans to retire from her position as of Nov. 1. She has filled countless roles for the school system over the years, including coaching some of the academic teams. "Since I’m now living in Scottsville, the daily commute is not something that I want to continue for much longer. I will deeply miss this town, my dear friends and colleagues, and my wonderful job, but it is time," she says,

FSNB, LC Gymnastics to honor Lee Dockins Friday
A reception to honor Lee Dockins will be held Friday at Logan County Gymnastics on Sportsman Club Road near North Main in Russellville from 3:30-5 p.m. At 4 and 4:30, she will perform some of the routines which helped her earn a pile of medals in the Special Olympics international competition in Greece this summer, in-cluding the gold in Best All-Around competition. The day is being sponsored by First Southern National Bank. Donnie and Polly Porter own Logan County Gymnastics and are Dockins' coaches..

LCHS graduate teaching in Japan radiation area

Logan County High School graduate Adrienne Ledbetter is working in Japan as an assistant language teacher as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. She is in Shiuoka, which is in the area where a nuclear plant metldown occurred in March. An Auburn native, Ledbetter is a graduate of Western Kentucky University. Lady Cougars runner-up in BGH volleyball tournament
After winning all eight of their games in the first four matches, the Logan County Lady Cougars fell 2-1 to Whitefield Academy of Louisville Saturday in the championship match of the Purples Classic at Bowling Green High. Logan beat Fort Campbell to finish 3-0 in its pool and then won 2-0 over Edmonson County in the semis. Whitefield's record improved to 20-4. Logan is 19-5

LCHS Show of Bands underway with 9 competitors
The Logan County High School Marching Cougar Band is holding its 14th Annual Festival of Bands where nine bands from Kentucky and Tennessee are competing for KMEA awards. Admission is $5. Concessions will be available for purchase. The LCHS Band will present its contest show as an exhibition. The band is directed by C. Allen Kennedy.

Third Great Awakening Sunday planned at Red River

First Baptist Church of Russellville will conduct its third annual Great Awakening Sunday at the Red River Meeting House at Schochoh on Sept. 24, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Pastor Buddy Crabtree says, "Worship, Food, Fellowship! Join us for this great time of worship at the site of the start of America's 2nd Great Awakening."

Lady Cougars win first two matches in BGH event
The Logan County Lady Cougars won their first two volleyball matches in the Purples Classic at Bowling Green High Friday, beating South Warren and Bullitt Central in straight games. The team coached by Steven Lyne will take a 17-4 record into the next found at 9 a.m. Saturday against Fort Campbell.

RHS, LCHS facing tough non-district opponents
The Russellville Panthers and Logan County Cougars are taking on strong opponents tonight. RHS (3-2) goes to Franklin-Simpson to take on the team they've played most during their 75-year history. F-S (4-1) is led by the region's top receiver, Jerrell Wickware.
The Cougars (3-2) will entertain Edmonson County (5-0), one of three undefeated teams remaining on the schedule. ECHS is led by junior Jacob Tobias, who is tops in the area in scoring and fourth in rushing. Logan's Justin Rone continues to lead the area in passing. Four Cougars are among the top nine tacklers in the area. They are Aaron Baldwin, Michael Thompson, Charlie Porter and Ian Woodall.

Cougar soccer plans Pink Out in Mrs. Phillips' honor

Before the Franklin-Simpson at Logan County boys soccer match Tuesday, the Cougars will hold a Pink Out at 5 p.m.in honor of the late Christy Phillips, mother of Logan soccer players Rachel, Caleb & Isaac Phillips. Mrs. Phillips died recently after a long battle with cancer. Booths will be set up for face painting, pink ribbon tattoos, snacks and more. All proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Awareness. Giveaways will be held between games.
Coach Eric Evans' team has a 5-7 record in its first varsity season, going into Saturday's matches with Fort Campbell & Christian County in the Colonels' Soccer Shootout at Hopkinsville's Stadium of Champions.

Music in the Barn set Saturday at South Union
Shakertown at South Union's1875 Grain Barn will be the site of live music and dessert this Saturday! Those attending can kick back in a relaxed family atmosphere and partake in some traditional Southern delicacies, including fried peach pies, fresh apple cake, apple cider slushes, and homemade Shaker Sweet Potato Pie ice cream from Chaney’s Dairy Barn. LCHS' focus on readying students for college, jobs
This year’s freshman class at Logan County High School will participate in a new national pilot program offering a comprehensive system of study similar to those used in leading education systems around the world, according to Principal Casey Jaynes. The pilot program, called Board Examination Systems, offers a rigorous course of study that will enable more LCHS students to earn the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in college and the workforce. This study is not narrowly focused on English and math at the expense of a well-rounded education. The Board Examination Systems include in-depth courses in English, math, science, history, and the arts. LCHS is among only six schools in Kentucky and 21 in the nation to be part of this new program.

Buddy Walk to raise funds for Down Syndrome

Games for kids, entertainment for all and a walk to raise funds for the South Central Kentucky Down Syndrome Support Group will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. To noon at Greenwood High School. Anyone who would like to make a donation can send it to Tracy Woodall Lockhart, 4020 Anderson Store Road, Lewisburg 42256. "If you would like to come and be a part ofDalton's (Lockhart) Team, we would love to have you," she says.
CrimeStoppers Golf Scramble Saturday
CrimeStoppers will hold its 9th Annual Golf Scramble Saturday with a 1 p.m. shotgun start (12:15 teams registration) at Rolling Hills Golf Course. There will be a Hole in One contest with $10,000 prize and a $1,000 plus Closest to the Pin on Par 3s and door pri-zes. Entry fee is $40 per person and includes green fee, cart fee and dinner. Mulligans can be purchased for $5 each. Four-person team entry only. Prize list- 1st place team $400, 2nd place team $300, 3rd place team $200 and 4th place team $100. Concerned Citizens partnering with Feed America
The Concerned Citizens of Russellville/Logan County is partnering with the Feeding American program to distribute food assistance to the needy. Boxes are being distributed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Those applying should bring their Social Security cards and proof of income for everyone in the household. Those who meet requirements can receive food boxes once per month, according to Director Doris Vick. Concerned Citizens is located at the KP Hall, 428 East Fourth Street, Russellville.

LCHS offering skills camp for middle school girls
Logan County High School will host a girls only Pre-Tryout Skills Camp, for 5th through 8th graders to get them ready for the middle school basketball tryouts. Camp is set for Oct. 3-8, 8:30-11:30 a.m. Cost is $25 per player if registration form and fee are received by Sept. 27 and $30 after that. All girls will receive a Logan County Gym Rats t-shirt, 12 hours of fundamental instruction in game-like settings, and ball-handling skills evaluated using the SuperHandles Middle School Ball-handling Evaluation. Checks can be made payable to LCHS Girls Basketball, 2200 Bowling Green Rd, Russellville, Registration forms were distributed to each middle school earlier. Defense leads Panthers to 15-14 win over Todd
After building a 15-0 first quarter lead, the Russellville Panthers held on for a 15-14 win over Todd Central during the RHS homecoming Friday. The Rebels dominated the second half, but the game was won by the RHS defense, Coach John Myers said after the game on WRUS. The Rebels had a chance to score the winning points on their last possession, but the Panthers stopped the visitors on a fourth and two.
Greenwood built a 27-0 halftime lead over visiting Logan County and won the Class 5A district opener 41-13.
Both Russellville and Logan County have 3-2 records at the mid-point of the season. Greenwood is 2-3 and Todd 0-5.

RHS Show of Bands today at Rhea Stadium

The annual Show of Bands sponsored by the Russellville Band Boosters will be held Saturday, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Eight visiting bands will compete at Rhea Stadium, including Logan County, which finished second in Class 4A and first in color guard at Franklin-Simpson last week. The host Marching Panthers, who compete in Class 1A, will present their show 'Imagination' as an exhibition. Brian Brown is the RHS director; Taylor Swallows is the field commander. The theme is a spin-off from the 2010 indoor drum line show. Swallows told the school board, “It’s a very conceptual show, as the band follows Ethan Shutt all over the field and plays out his imagination.”

Cougars face first 5A test at Greenwood tonight
The Logan County Cougars will play one of the most significant football games in school history Friday night. Not only is this the first Class 5A district game in school history, but it appears to be a game in which the Cougars could be competitive. After winning only one game last year, the Cougars are 3-1 in 2011 under new Coach Dain Gregory. Greenwood, which breezed to a 45-0 win at LCHS last year, is struggling this year with only one win. The Gators lost 56-0 last week to Franklin-Simpson. Cougar quarterback Justin Rone leads the area with 673 passing yards while Twin Lancaster is tops among 13 area teams in receiving with catches for 340 yards while teammate Aratan Martin is eighth with 189 yards. Cougars Michael Thompson, Aaron Baldwin and Brennan Rostampour are in the top five in tackles.

As part of it's Happy Feet + Learning Feet program, Russellvillle's Rotarians helped fit 297 students in the local school systems with shoes Wednesday at Crittenden Drive Church of Christ. Jim Riley said that another 22 will be fitted later. See the story in August Articles on The LoJo.

Mays names Doug Gloyd Graves County AD
Graves County High School Principal R.B. Mays has appointed Logan County High graduate Doug Gloyd as athletic director. A former LCHS teacher and coach himself, Mays' staff already included former Cougar Lance Gregory as head football coach. Gloyd, who has lived in Mayfield for several years, but has been driving to Trigg County as assistant principal the last five years. He was driving to Hopkinsville as a football coach the prior two years. He was told about the position by former LCHS assistant coach Lyndon Dunning, who has coached at GCHS for almost twenty years. After graduating from Logan, Gloyd played football for Campbellsville University.

Good Samaritan has to stop financial assistance
At the last meeting of the Logan County Good Samaritan Board of Directors, the decision was made to halt any further financial assistance until further notice."This very difficult decision was based on the fact that our donations so far this year are very much below our expectations. We can not continue to spend more than we are taking in," explains Director Denise McDonald "We will continue all other services and are striving to return to providing financial assistance again as soon as possible." Radio Shack moves to Shoppes of Russellville
Russellville Radio Shack has moved to the Shoppes of Russellville on the hill above and south of Wal-Mart. Owner Lynn Ashby, an Auburn native, said he operated the business in the Logan Place shopping center across from Russellville High School for 17 years. Hibbett Sports made the move from Logan Place to the new shop-ping center about the same time. Already located in the Shoppes of Russellville were Mighty Dollar, Burkes Outlet and Maria Bonita Mexican restaurant. Only Tractor Supply Company and Goodys, which was previously known as Peebles, are left in Logan Place, which for several years housed Wal-Mart and the largest of the Houchens Markets in Russellville..

Red River Meeting House Asn. meeting set Sunday
The 63rd Annual potluck lunch and meeting of the Red River Meet-ing House Association will be held Sunday at Schochoh, beginning at 1 p.m. The Association meeting and church service will begin at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Dr, John Franklin of Post Oak Baptist Church will be the speaker. All those attending become members of the Association.

Special Olympics State Softball Tournament Friday
The
Russellville Rampage will play Friday at 7:p.m. in the Special Olympics State Softball Tournament on the Blue Field of Buchan-on Park in Bowling Green. If they win they will play on Saturday at 12:45 p.m .on the Green Field. If they lose they will play Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on the Grey Field and depending on the results they may play again on Sunday, Team members areDalton Lockhart, Taylor Thompson, Nick Posey, Tony Thomas, Randy Lennon, Brandon Prince, Mickey Britt, Kelly Lennon, Tony Mayes, John Miller and Chuckie Woods.

Golden Apple for Stevenson school, Tammy Corum
Educational Resources Inc. (ERI), will visit Stevenson Elementary at Sept. 20 to present the school with its “Golden Apple Award.” SES’ Tammy Corum will be honored as Principal of the Year. The honors go to a school in the nation that demonstrates a commi-tment to effective teaching and Direct Instruction.
This honor is based on the staff’s implementation of a Direct In-struction Reading program, designed in partnership with ERI to help all children read at or above grade level by the time they exit the primary program. Stevenson Elementary has partnered with EDI for the past four years to implement the Reading Mastery program.
Since adopting Reading Mastery as the school’s reading program, students, parents and teachers have seen tremendous growth in reading skills at Stevenson Elementary. In keeping with the focus on reading, the SES staff has expanded the time spent teaching reading skills from 90 minutes a day to 120 minutes of instruction in all primary classrooms. A fulltime reading interventionist has been hired to work with teachers, students & parents.

Lady Cougar volleyball clinches top district seed
The Logan County Lady Cougars won 2-0 in all three divisions of a volleyball match at Todd Central Tuesday night, including 25-5, 25-10 in the varsity. The Lady Cougars are 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the district, Coach Steven Lyne's team is the top seed in the district tournament. The Ladies play at powerful Owensboro Catholic on Thursday and then host the Cougar Challenge Saturday.

Logan frosh 2nd in Apollo volleyball tournament
The Logan County freshmen team finished second in the Owens-boro Apollo Invitational Saturday, losing to Owensboro Catholic twice while winning over Henderson County, Daviess County, Greenwood and Owensboro Catholic.

Gospel Reunion Festival in Blues concert series
The Russellville Blues’ Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series features one the Gospel Reunion Festival. Events begin at 1 p.m. today at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Museums at the corner of Sixth and Morgan Streets in Russellville. Various groups will perform into the evening hours. Come in time to enjoy local food and beverage vendors, along with area artists.

Panthers, Cougars get football road wins Friday
With Justin Rone throwing three touchdown passes and intercep-ting two on defense, the Logan County Cougars won 20-7 at Todd Central Friday.Twin Lancaster caught two of the TD strikes and Aratan Martin the other. Brice Moore added three catches. On the ground, Jermaine Collier picked up 79 yards.
The Russellville Panthers got their first win of the season, knock-ing off Hopkins County Central 41-13. That game can be heard at 2 p.m. Saturday on WRUS.

Lady Cougars beat F-S for 60th straight district win
The Logan County Lady Cougars won at Franklin-Simpson Thursday night for their 60th straight district win. Coach Steven Lyne's team won 25-8, 25-5. The Lady Cougars are now 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the district. The LCHS JV, which won the championship of its own invitational tournament, also beat the Lady Cats.
