Cougars win Roy's/FSNB Classic title

With an 80-74 victory over Great Crossings Sunday night, homestanding Logan County (9-3) won the championship of the Roy’s Bar-B-Que/First Southern National Bank Classic. Louisville Collegiate edged Clinton County 57-55 for third place, and Coach Tim Riley’s Owensboro Catholic Aces beat crosstown rival Daviess County 67-46 for fifth. “This was a quality tournament from top to bottom. What a great job by booster parents and the coaching staff!” says LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard.

Cougars to play for Roy’s/

FSNB title tonight at 7

The Logan County Cougars will play host to Great Crossings in the finals of the Roy's Bar-B-Que/First Southern National Bank Classic tonight at 7 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 in the three-day tournament. Coach John Tinsley's Cougars, who have won eight of their last nine games, have beaten Daviess County 68-35 and Clinton County 66-54. Great Crossings, which plays in the tough Lexington region, is 6-4 and has a win over always tough Scott County. Coach Steve Page's Warhawks have beaten Hopkinsville 53-50 and Louisville Collegiate 55-54 in this tournament.

Karina Holloman wins highest

honors from art school

Logan County High School graduate Karina Holloman received top honors at the Nossi College of Art Senior Art Show. The Nossi teachers and staff select award winners from the four degree programs. Karina received the Academic All Star Award for earning the highest grade point average in her program. She also received the Most Creative Award, which is given to the student that demonstrates the highest levels of imagination and creativity.  Karina received the Talent Discovery Award, given to the student who is considered extremely talented and the “best of the best” among all the graduates. Karina is a December graduate with a Bachelor in Graphic Art - Commercial Illustration degree. Her artwork can be viewed at karinadoesart.myportfolio.com. Karina is the daughter of Chris and Kerry Holloman of Adairville.

Lewisburg Bank's Auburn office to open

Lewisburg Banking Company’s Auburn new office, which is located at 124 Sugar Maple Drive, Suite F, is scheduled to open this Thursday, Jan. 2. President Edna Hughes says regulatory approval for the full-time service office was received from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis in May. The office will have an Interactive Teller Machine (ITM), which features live video tellers over 56 hours each week. The bank is located behind and across the street from Casey’s General Store and is in the same strip as two healthcare facilities.

Acappella's Pendergrass to lead

Fellowship worship services Sunday

George Pendergrass, second tenor in the Hall of Fame Christian Music group Acappela, will lead worship services at Fellowship Church of Christ this Sunday. Pendergrass is a close friend of Fellowship minister Jimmie Hampton, dating back to their years at Lipscomb University. Pendergrass and his wife travel around the world doing mission work, much of it involving vocal music. He also teaches music. The Fellowship Church is located at the intersection of East Fourth and Franklin streets. Bible study begins at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:30.

Braxton Meguiar to sign with Wabash Valley

Logan County baseball star Braxton Meguiar will hold his official collegiate signing ceremony Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Logan County Career & Technical Center. He will play for Wabash Valley Community College in Illinois, traditionally one of the top junior college teams in the nation. This spring as a junior, Meguiar was named third team all-state in baseball. He had 60 hits, including 7 homers, 19 doubles, 23 walks, and 46 each of RBIs and runs scored while batting .484 and striking out just 8 times. He also put together a 34-game hitting streak, second longest in state history.

Logan teams sweep Franklin

Both the Logan County girls and girls played outstanding team ball in recording impressive district wins over visiting Franklin-Simpson Friday. With four seniors--Peyton and Paige Vanzant, Addie White and Kennedy Nichols--scoring in double figures, Coach Finley Baird's Lady Cougars beat the Lady Cats 65-50. The Lady Cougars got a life from junior reserve Abby Hinton. The Cougars followed with a 64-57 win over the Cats. Senior reserve Jay Hardison had a tremendous second half and finished with varsity career-high 21 points. Hardison, newcomer Jose Nazario and center Dylan Basham led a 16-2 run for Coach John Tinsley's team early in the fourth quarter. Nazario scored 13 points and Basham 10. Kate Norwood scored 17 and Hadley Turner 16 for the Franklin girls while Kyjuan Stutzman led the F-S boys with 22.

Chris Baker's team playing

for state title in Florida tonight

Chris Baker is linebackers coach for the Escambia High School Gators, who will be playing for the Florida State Class 6A state football championship tonight. The undefeated Gators will play Miami Central at Daytona. The game will be streamed live on the fhsaa website. Chris is the son of the late Russellville and Logan County head football coach Stumpy Baker and of the late Frieda Baker, who was principal of Russellville Middle School.

Dr. Webb's cousin elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

Sunday morning, Russellville optometrist  Dr. Bill Webb was excited. He had been talking with his cousin, former St. Louis Cardinals great Ted Simmons, about the upcoming voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. Sunday evening Simmons was the leading vote getter from the Veterans Committee and is now a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer designee.  He will be inducted this summer (July 26) along with the late Marvin Miller, the attorney who led the Players Union to great gains. Simmons came to Russellville one off-season and visited with a Russellville Middle School class taught by the late Patricia Webb, Dr. Webb's wife.

deGraffenried Chorale to present

Christmas concert Sunday

This Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Russellville United Methodist Temple, the deGraffenried Chorale will present its Christmas concert. Mary Beth Dowden is the director and Susan Fox the accompaniist. Susan Taylor Allpress will play her flute on a piece composed for our Chorale by Jeffrey Fox.

Doctors chosen to serve

Kerr Family Dentistry patients

The family of Dr. Paul Kerr, who died unexpectedly Nov. 19, has announced that Dr. Tommy Birkenhauer and Dr. Daniel Birkenhauer of Bluegrass Oral Health Center will provide "exceptional care and service to Kerr Family Dentistry patients. Both doctors are highly experienced and possess the courteous bedside manner you are accustomed to. They will carry on Dr. Kerr’s legacy proudly," the announcement says.

Brea Croslin to sign with Murray softball

A signing ceremony will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the Logan County CTC to commemorate Lady Cougar softball star Brea Croslin with the Murray State University softball team. Croslin is an eight-year varsity starter, the first two with the Russellville Lady Panthers and the last six with the Lady Cougars. She had committed with the University of Illinois--a Big Ten school--as a sophomore, but decommitted this year and chose the Lady Racers.
