Sheila Scruggs to succeed
her dad on LTC board
From LTC Connect: We are proud to welcome Sheila Scruggs as our new Auburn 1 director. Sheila was appointed by our board at their January 23rd meeting to fill the remaining term left vacant by the recent passing of her father, Coren Estes. Sheila lives in Chandlers and has deep connections to both the Chandlers and Auburn communities. Sheila has spent her career at Hopkinsville Elevator, which is also a cooperative, and that gives her great insight into how cooperatives are structured, governed, and work for members. Sheila also serves as a volunteer firefighter with her family, she is the Secretary/Treasurer for Logan County Search and Rescue, and she is an active member of Chandlers Chapel Church.

The girls game will tipoff at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:30.

Homecoming Week at RHS begins
Russellville High School will crown its Basketball Homecoming Queen and King between games with district rival Franklin-Simpson this Friday. Different spirit-building themes have been announced and can be seen in the accompanying graphic. Nominees are seniors Graciann Beard, A’miyah Collier, Kilby Long, Andrew Dowlen, Dalton Gilbert and Jayden Russell; juniors Reese Croslin, Olivia Duncan, Treyvonn Stevenson and Zacc Temple; sophomores LaReesha Cawthorn, Addy Wright, Octavius ‘Tutu’ McKeage and Caleb Ragland; and freshmen Kadence Lee, Chloe Penrod, Tayshon Cross and Braeden West. Both varsity teams play at Franklin Monday night.

Cougar Baseball to honor '13 regional
champs at annual booster dinner
This marks the 10-year anniversary for Logan County Baseball's 2013 4th Region Champions! That team will be recognized at the annual Alumni/Booster Dinner this year, Saturday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m., at the Logan County CTC. All former Cougar baseball players and anyone who wants to support the team is welcome to attend. There's no charge for the food, but those attending will be given the opportunity to support the team finacially. No reservations are required. Modern Woodman's Sonya Cardwell and First Southern National Bank sponsor the event. Guest speakers will be Athletic Director Greg Howard, former Cougar and Belmont University catcher Jackson Campbell & Coach Ethan Meguiar. 2012 captain Dustin Cartas is one of the inductees into the Cougar Hall of Fame Friday night between games of the Clash of the Cats.

Spring youth soccer signups beginning
Russellville Recreation will begin spring soccer signups next week. They will be held Jan. 23-Feb. 21 during regular office hours Mondays through Thursdays. Additional hours will be available a couple of days most weeks. See the accompanying chart. Ages are 4 through 12 with the possibility of an under 14 league if there is sufficient interest. The fee is $40 per player.

Hall, Hendrix to lead Logan school board
The two most experienced members of the Logan County Board of Education were elected as its leaders at this week’s January meeting. Auburn’s Tim Hall was elected chairman and Lewisburg’s Teresa Hendrix vice chairman. The other three members are relatively new to the role. Olmstead’s Ethan Holloway is in the middle of his first term. Kyle Wetton was sworn in for the first time after being elected to represent Adairville. Lynette Baker also is new after being chosen to succeed her husband, new Logan County Judge-Executive Phil Baker, as the member from Chandlers.

Ryan Rayno to play collegiately for Wesleyan
Star Logan County running back Ryan Rayno has committed to play his collegiate football at Kentucky Wesleyan. Rayno, who was named co-Area Player of the Year, ran over 2,000 yards and scored 24 touchdowns in the Cougars’ 11-2 season this year. In his career, he totaled 3,571 yards on 489 carries (7.3 yards per run) and scored 45 TDs. He played in 44 games, including all 36 his final three seasons. Helping him reach all those milestones were a talented offensive line, including five seniors who started 14 years among them—Isaac Poe, Keaton Jenkins, Jaxon Kenner, Kadin Switzer and Seth Graves. Senior Ryland Nichols was often a converted lineman playing blocking back this year.

Allie Strong Night Tuesday
When the Logan County High School Lady Cougars and Cougars entertain Allen County-High School tonight, it will officially be “Allie Strong Night” as well. Allie Kitchens has been a part of Lady Cougar basketball for years and is now a member of the middle school team. She also has Cystic Fibrosis. Buckets will be passed through the stands for those attending to make contributions to help her family with expenses related to the disease. Todd starts strong, maintains lead,
beats Lady Cougars by 60-47
Hitting 5 three-pointers on the way to 20 first-quarter points, the Todd Central Lady Rebels celebrated homecoming Friday by beating the Logan County Lady Cougars 60-47. Todd's offense primarily featured Abby Williams (23 points) and Alexis Taylor (22). The Lady Rebels also played good front-court defense, holding Logan to just one three-pointer for the game. Lady Cougar long-range specialist Nora Epley rarely was able to get a shot off and was held scoreless; her defense, however, helped stop the Todd three-point barrage. Gracie Borders led Logan's points with 17 while Mason added 13 and Emily Borders 11. The Todd victory ended a five-game win streak for the Lady Cougars.
The Todd boys overpowered the Cougars early. The Rebels led 21-4 after a quarter and started a running clock in the last few seconds of the first half. It was 47-14 at the intermission.

at Pastfinders meeting Friday

Tom Noe will speak about his famous ancestor Elijah Hise, who was called "the most able man Russellville has produced." Everyone is invited to attend and there's no admission charge.

Friday's RHS-Franklin games postponed
The district doubleheader scheduled Friday between the girls and boys teams of Russellville and Franklin-Simpson has been postponed because both F-S teams will play in the Class 2A state tournament this weekend. RHS Athletic Director Ryan Davenport has announced that games will now be played on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Coach
Orlando Hayden's Lady Panthers and Coach Phil Todd's Panthers will open regional All A Classic play Monday against Cumberland County.

Jackson receives state horticulture honor
Bill Jackson, owner and founder of Jackson’s Orchard in Warren County and member of Kentucky Horticulture Society all 58 years of the agri-business’ operation, has received the Dr. John Strang Award from that group. The award is named for a professor at UK and a vegetable and fruit specialist. The honor is bestowed upon fruit and vegetable growers who have contributed greatly to the horticulture industry in Kentucky. Jackson’s Orchard is located at the top of a steep incline and draws thousands of customers/ visitors each year. Bill Jackson sends family members to Russellville with peaches and apples a few weeks most summers to operate the Kentucky Wonders Garden Market in conjunction with Elaine Turner's
Turner Valley Produce.

Logan FFA names local speech winners
A highlight of each FFA chapter year is speech contests and choosing local winners to move on to multi-chapter competition. Those winners were Brock Repsher, Abbi Walpole, Hannah Hallman, Lilly Robey, Lydia Owens, Jenna Coles, Klay VanSickle, Hannah Brown, Avery Beason, Sophee Spears, Calista Petrie, Chaney Barrow, Rhyan Curry, Felix Fernandez-Agustin, Hailey Burgess and Bella Cron. Panthers build big leads, hold on for win
Holding Logan County without a field goal the first 10 minutes of the game, the Russellville Panthers built multiple double-digit leads, saw the margin reduced to a bucket, and then hit enough free throws late to win the Clash of the Cats 59-53. Coach Phil Todd’s team led 13-6, 27-18 and 41-36 at the first three stops. That margin grew to 47-36, but Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars went on a 13-2 run to pull within 51-49 on Jack Delaney’s free throws with 1:36. A couple of fourth-quarter offensive fouls committed by the Cougars hurt their cause, and the Panthers got key free throws from Eli McMurry & Layne Steele to seal the win. Nick Woodard of RHS scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. Jaren Byrd added 11 in the win. Colby Collins hit 5 three-pointers for Logan, but one was nullified on a moving screen. He had 14 points and Zane Batten 13. The teams missed 10 free throws each.

Lady Cougars win big in Clash opener
Lady Cougars win big in Clash opener
After jumping out to an 18-2 lead, the Logan County Lady Cougars were dominant in their 54-37 win at Russellville Friday. Gracie Borders hit two 3-pointers and Nora Epley another to put Logan up 9-2 three minutes into the game. Borders scored 8 points in the first quarter, 15 by halftime and 23 for the game. Emily Borders also had a tremendous game. She scored 11 in the first half and 15 for the game. Both of the Borders girls were tough on the boards, too, and the entire team passed well. Russellville played better the second quarter, cutting the lead to 8 with about 3 minutes left in the half, but the Lady Panthers led 33-17 at the break. Coach Dedra Adler’s team dominated the third quarter much like it had the first. Epley hit another trey to make it 48-22 at the stop. Brinley Mason came off the bench to help RHS, but it was too late. Takayla Mason added 8 points for Logan. LaReesa Cawthorn scored 11 and A’miyah Collier 10 for the Lady Panthers.

MLK Unity Walk planned Thursday
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day is scheduled this Thursday in Russellville. The Walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the Jesus Church of Russellville at 637 East Fifth Street. The walkers will head to the Logan County Justice Center on West Fourth Street. Those who aren’t able to make the walk can meet the group there for a program. The speaker will be Kesi Neblett, who is a current reality television star. The event is organized by Community Projects Inc., which is led by Charles and Marvinia Benton Neblett.

This region’s leading newspaper for over a century made two monumental announcements in what is now its final Sunday edition today, Jan. 1, 2023. General Manager Joe Imel, who has risen through the ranks of Bowling Green Daily News employees over the years, said that 1) newspapers will no longer be brought to subscribers’ homes by carriers and 2) the Sunday paper will now become a “weekend edition,” which will appear on Saturdays. Paid subscribers will now receive their papers by mail from the post office. The Park City Daily News traces its roots to 1854 and was owned by the John Gaines family for 140 years until it was sold to Boone Newspapers of Alabana in the year which just ended. The paper’s news-filled website continues to be popular. Subscribers with questions can call 270-783-3200.
