Logan Schools to be in

session Presidents' Day

Logan County Schools Calendar Update: Monday, Feb. 19, will be the makeup day for the Jan. 22 snow day, pending approval at the regular February board meeting. School will now be in session on Presidents' Day. This was previously scheduled as a staff professional development day.

Funeral services to be in Auburn
Saturday for realtor John Turner

Funeral services will be held Saturday for highly respected retired cattleman, financial advisor and realtor John Turner, 87. He was a banker in Louisville before moving to Logan County to manage the Shakertown Farm. He then began his own cattle operation nearby at South Union. He and his late wife Mary raised their three daughters there and were active in the Auburn community. He then opened Shaker Realty and Auction, which was located on West Fourth Street in Russellville for many years before moving to their current location further out on Hopkinsville Streetm which is now headed by his daughter, Pat Taylor. He also was an officer of national firm Primerica Financial Services for 40 years. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pearce Memorial Methodist Church on Main Street in Auburn.

Dates set for city schools to

make up missed weather days

Russellville Schools will use designated makeup days Feb. 19 and March 18 for classes to be held in place of two days missed last week because of frigid, snowy weather, the system has announced.

Double district seedings at stake

When Logan County’s basketball teams go to Franklin-Simpson tonight for a weather-delayed doubleheader, top district seeding in both divisions will be at stake. The Cougars and the Wildcats are both 3-0 in district games, with Logan having won over Russellville twice and Todd Central once and F-S holding two wins over Todd and one against RHS. The girls teams also are 3-0 in the district with wins matching the boys teams. The Lady Cougars are 13-6 and rated fifth in the region, but the Lady Kats are 19-1 and top-rated. The F-S girls are led by former RHS standout LaReesha Cawthorn, who is averaging 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds after transferring last summer. The girls game begins at 6 p.m., and both games can be heard on all WRUS platforms.

Tonight's scheduled freshmen and junior varsity boys basketball games between Russellville and Logan County have been canceled, according to LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard.

Farewell Tea set for Greg Howard

A farewell tea is scheduled tomorrow (Wednesday) to honor Logan County Schools Athletic Director Greg Howard, who is leaving Logan to assume the same position for the Warren County School District. The public is invited to the tea, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Logan County CTC.

Lady Cougar games to

start early Monday

From Logan County Athletic Director Greg Howard: The Lady Cougars JV/V will play at home tomorrow night vs Barren County. We have adjusted the start time to a 5 p.m. tip for the JV game with the Varsity contest to follow. We look forward to seeing those that can get out and safely travel to the games.

Logan County Athletics has announced, "Due to inclement weather and road conditions, tonight's District basketball games are cancelled. They are rescheduled for Jan. 29 at Franklin-Simpson High School?

The American Red Cross Blood Drive scheduled for Friday at New Friendship Church in Auburn has been canceled because of Friday.

Local schools not in person Tuesday

The two local school districts are joining their neighbors in being closed Tuesday because of frigid, snowy weather. Actually, Logan County Schools will be online as NT#1 for this year. Russellville Schools will not be in session at all. Joining them are Simpson and Warren County schools along with all six campuses of SKYCTC. Schools were and many governmental agencies were already closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Holiday.

Logan teams sweep Todd,

each now 2-0 in district

 

Names and numbers stand out in Logan County’s basketball district sweep of visiting Todd Central Friday. Brenley Adler scored 21 points and Takayla Mason 20 while Kyla Bilyeu hit the winning free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the Lady Cougars’ come-from-behind 55-53 win. Reserve Colby Collins hit seven 3-pointers, including five in the third quarter, to join Samson Hightower with team highs of 23 points while the bench outscored the Rebel subs 29-0 in the Cougars’ 80-68 win in the nightcap. But that doesn’t come close to telling the whole story because so many people contributed to making both LCHS teams 2-0 in district play.

For anyone interested in umpiring high school and middle school baseball, there will be a new umpire orientation on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at  6 p.m. or Sunday, Jan. 21, at  2 p.m. at the Bob Kirby Library in Bowling Green. For more information, contact Phil Burkeen at 270-791-1845.

Logan teams sweep RHS in Clash

 

The routes to victory were vastly different but the results were the same as homestanding Logan County swept a district doubleheader in the first Clash of the Cats Friday against Russellville. Coach Dedra Adler’s Lady Cougars clicked on all cylinders as they romped past the RHS girls 83-22. It ran Logan’s record to an impressive 10-4 as 2024 begins. In the nightcap, Kade Wall and Samson Hightower each hit a free throw in the last half minute of overtime for the winning Cougar points in a 72-70 victory. Wall finished with 20 points with Hightower and Colby Collins joining him in double figures Eli McMurry, the only Panther senior, led all scorers with 25. Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars ran their record to 8-6.

NAACP MLK Jubilee Celebration Breakfast plannedon  Jan. 13

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP will hold its annual MLK Jubilee Celebration on Saturday Jan. 13, at 9 a.m. as they honor and celebrate Rev. Dr, Martin Lutler King Jr.  at the Concerned Citizens KP Hall, 428 East Fifth Street, Russellville. The guest speaker will be Pastor Marius Beard. be  The suggested donation is $7 per person.
