RMS Cheer Team named

for next year’s action

After recent tryouts, Coach Derek Johnson has named the Russellville Middle School Cheer Team for 2024-25. They are Rhlee Allen, Addie Basham, Lauren Bedel, Ayriauna Bess, Javeyah Bigbee, Leela Boisseau,  Majestic Boyd, Kamoni Covington, Anyiah Hampton, Layla Hampton, Kinsley Harvey, Nasheli Hernandez, Denaziq Kennedy, Jai Levell, Josie Penrod, Jossy Poindexter, Rose Staggs, Kiki Stovall, Khloe Sydnor, Emmalyn Thomas, Nora Ward and Aliza Wilson.

4-H Livestock Showmanship

Clinic offered this Saturday

The Logan County 4-H Livestock Club Showmanship Clinic is planned for this Saturday at the Ag Arena adjacent to the Logan County Extension Office. Those planning to show cattle should be there from 1-2:30 p.m. with the clinic for those showing swine from 2:30-4. This is in preparation for the livestock shows that are in the early portion of the Logan County Fair in June as well as other shows in the area.

Thompson, Zenner join Lady

Cougar basketball staffs

The addition of two well-known figures in local sports/education to the Logan County Lady Cougar Basketball coaching staff. was announced this weekend. Nathan Thompson, a local banker who has served as head coach of Cougar men’s basketball and athletic director of his alma mater, Russellville High School, will assist Coach Dedra Adler on the high school team. Cassie Faughn Zenner, who played basketball at Todd Central and served in many roles with the Russellville Schools, including principal of Russellville Middle School, will be head coach of the Logan County Middle School team. She currently works at the Green River Regional Education Cooperative.

Lady Panthers sweep All A

pool, advance to semis

The Russellville Lady Panthers edged Hickman County 4-3 in 10 innings Saturday and then won their next two games with ease to win their pool in the All A state tournament at Owensboro Saturday. Coach Ryan Davenport’s team will play Jackson County at 8:30 Sunday morning in the semifinals. he KHSAA RPI makes RHS a slight favorite against the Jackson County Lady Generals. The Lady Panthers beat Green County 11-1 and Lexington Chrisitan 14-2 in their second and third game Saturday.

Russellville Rotary honors top teachers

Russellville Rotary Club presented its annual Outstanding Teacher Awards to teachers from all public schools in our community Thursday. The 2024 winners are LaShawnda Lee of Logan County CTC, Christie Chick of Lewisburg, Jennifer Rogers of Russellville High School, Shelia Thomason-Washer of Olmstead, Beth Canler – Russellville Middle School, Jon Jukes -Logan County High School, Joshua Hall – Auburn, James Sisenstein – Stevenson Elementary, Nikki Jones – Chandlers and Joshua Robertson – Adairville.

City and county schools

seek school safety sponsors

Logan County Schools and Russellville Independent Schools are partnering together for commitments to school safety. They are seeking local sponsorship for the purchase and implementation of the Centegix School Safety Alert System to further enhance the safety of our students and staff across both school districts. The school districts are holding two 30-minute informational sessions about the sponsorship for local business leaders. The first is on Tuesday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m., and the second is on Friday, May 10, at 9:30 a.m. Both of these meetings are at the Logan County Career and Technical Center, 2400 Bowling Green Rd., Russellville.

Summer Saturdays on The Square offered

People could have ample reasons to come to downtown Russellville on Saturdays for the next four months, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce has announced. Summer Saturdays on The Square will run May through August. Vendors are invited to set up in the two vacant lots on the corner of East Fourth and Main streets where historic buildings have been razed. A fee of $150 will be assessed for a Vendor Permit with Chamber members paying a discounted $100. Times will be “sunup to sunset.” Contact the Chamber at 270-726-2206 for more information.

Concerts @ Carrico begin next week

Jaimie Ryan & The Nashville Players will kick off this summer’s Concert @ Carrico series next week. They will perform on Carrico Park Square in Russellville Saturday, May 4, beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to live music, food trucks and vendors will be available, The event is free. Attendees should provide their own seating.

RHS Drama to present popular musical

The stage at deGraffenried Auditorium will be filled with music and fun this weekend when the Russellville High School Drama Department presents the beloved Disney children’s musical The Little Mermaid three times. Showings will begin Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

RMS begins search for new principal

Russellville Middle School has begun the search for a new principal. The Board of Education had a called meeting Tuesday to begin their part of the process. The position being open was advertised April 16, and applications will be accepted until May 12. Interviews are to begin May 15. Darryl Green of Christian County has been the RMS principal the last two years. Two of the desirable qualities being sought for the person filling the role are “rooted in community” and “district of choice.”

Softball teams get district wins

Streaks continued Tuesday in district diamond play for teams from the Land of Logan. The Russellville Lady Panthers beat Todd Central for the 17th straight game, dating back to April 25, 2017. Sixteen of those wins have been with Ryan Davenport as coach. Tuesday’s score was 12-2. The Logan County Lady Cougars beat Franklin-Simpson for the sixth straight time and ran their record against the Lady Cats to 11-1 since the start of the 2019 season. Tuesday’s win was by 14-3.  The visiting baseball Cougars, however, lost to Franklin-Simpson 3-2 Tuesday after dominating the Wildcats 7-1 Monday. Two of the top programs in Fourth Region baseball, they tend to split victories every season.

Community Baby Shower Saturday

The Logan County Health Coalition will host the Logan County Community Baby Shower on Saturday, April 27, from 10-11 a.m. at the Logan County Extension Office. It’s for expectant parents and parents of children up to age six months. It’s a drive-thru event. Parents and parents-to-be will receive information, gifts and door prizes. For more information, contact Raquel Nash at Olmstead School or 4-H Agent Carrie Derossett at the extension office.

Benefit Cruise-In planned in Adairville

The 2nd Annual Rev Up for Autism Cruise-in Car Show will be held on the Adairville Park Square this Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Also planned are a cornhole tournament, a cake walk and Kids Games. Proceeds will be donated to Vanderbilt Children’s Development Medicine in honor of August Pye.

Sweeney leads Cougars over F-S

Senior Chance Sweeney led the Logan County Cougars on the mound and at the plate Tuesday in a 7-1 district win over visiting Franklin-Simpson. Sweeney struck out seven Wildcats while pitching a 1-runm 4-hit game. Batting, he homered, singled and drove in three runs. Harper Butler also homered and scored twice. Davin Yates reached base in all four of his plate appearances. The same two teams play again today at Franklin-Simpson. The Wildcats' top two pitchers, starter Brevin Scott and reliever Carmine Cook, worked on the mound for the Cats.

Isaiah 117 House groundbreaking set

The official groundbreaking for the Isaiah 117 House in Logan County will be held Tuesday at noon on the grounds of Mulch Outfitters & Landscaping at 1850 Nashville Road on the south side of Russellville near the bypass. Look for a big yellow sign behind the animal hospital. Several churches are bringing their vans to transport guests from their parking lot to the site. Isaiah 117 House is designed to assist children in stages of the foster program. This will be the first Isaiah 117 House in the state of Kentucky.

Mark White joins UT Martin staff

In a reversal of roles, Olmstead High School graduate Mark White has been named assistant men's basketball coach at UT Martin of the OVC under new head coach Jeremy Shulman. Almost two decades ago, Shulman was an assistant coach at EMCC during White's first three years as head coach there. Beginning with the 2009-10 season, White led East Mississippi to a five-year run that produced a 115-33 record (.777 winning percentage), four consecutive regular season conference crowns (43-5 league record during that span) and four straight appearances in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, courtesy of four consecutive NJCAA Region 23 titles.t. White also had much success has head coach at Tallahassee Community College in Florida. Shulman won his conference championship 11 of the last 12 years at East Florida State College and reached the junior college Final Four twice. White started his college coaching career as an assistant to Rick Stansbury at Mississippi State of the SEC.

Ribbon cutting Friday for

new South Central Bank office

The Logan County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for the new location of South Central Bank in Russellville Friday at noon. The bank is now in a larger, remodeled section of Logan Place shopping center just a few doors down from its previous office. It’s on the southwest corner of the shopping area across from Arby’s and Russellville High School and joins the Ruler food store. This is part of an open house the bank is holding Friday afternoon.

Date, rides provider changed

for Logan County Fair

The dates for most of the Logan County Fair have been changed, the fair board announced this week. Previously scheduled in June, the major events of the fair, including the carnival, have been moved to the week of July 9-13. The new provider is Kissel Entertainment Ride Company, which also furnishes the rides for the Kentucky State Fair and the always popular Robertson County Fair in Springfield. Animal shows will remain as previously schedule during June 17-21.

Logan band to host Songs and Supper

Live music performed by several Logan County High School Band members will fill the air along with the aroma of pasta and garlic bread Tuesday, April 23, from 5-7 p.m. Called “Songs and Supper,” this band fundraiser will be held in the LCHS Auxiliary Gym, which is currently doubling as the school’s cafeteria while construction is underway on the southeast section of the school. There will be two pasta choices, salad and garlic toast, and desserts and drinks. The cost is $10 per person. To go orders are available.

Spring Cruise-In at Kirby Funeral Services

The fourth annual Spring Cruise-In and Car Show with Clay and Friends will be held in the parking lot of Kirby Funeral Services Russellville from 1-5 p.m. this Sunday, April 21. Awards will include Top 10, Best Pain, Best Interior and Best of Show. Justin Kirby will be the host and Clay Bilyeu will provide the music. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Food trucks will be on site.

Sweeney's ERA drops below 1.0

Senior Chance Sweeney pitched the Logan County Cougars to an 8-0 shutout of McLean County on the road Monday for his third win of the season, dropping his earned run average to an eye-popping 0.94. He’s given up only five earned runs in 37.1 innings. Davin Yates tripled, walked, drove in three runs and scored in the game. Noah Mosley singled in two runs. Harper Butler, Dayman McLean and Sweeney got the only other Cougar hits.

Russellville Rural Annual Fund Raiser

One of each spring’s most popular events is Russellville Rural Fire Department’s Annual Fund Raiser. This year it will be held at the Logan County Extension Office, beginning at 5 p.m. A pork loin dinner will be $10 and a kids’ hot dog plate $5. The fun will include door prizes, live entertainment and a $300 grand prize.

Services set in North Logan

for Opry's Norah Lee Allen

Funeral services and burial will be held in North Logan Wednesday afternoon for one of the Grand Ole Opry’s most enduring voices,. Norah Lee Allen, 76Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with the service to begin at 2 at Stuart Chapel Church, 6002 Stuart Chapel Road outside of Lewisburg. The former Norah Lee Stuart, she was the wife of Duane Allen, lead singer of the internationally famous Oak Ridge Boys. The daughter of the late Noble and Ima Mae Stuart, she went from singing gospel music with the legendary Chuck Wagon Gang to becoming a regular on all Opry sessions as a backup singer for many of the greatest Opry performers. Her group was known as the Carol Lee Singers or the Opry Staff Singers, and she sang in that role for over 40 years. Another funeral service was held at Hendersonville Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon.
