Jan. 2, 2026

Cougars’ game tonight begins at 6

The Logan County Cougars’ first game of 2026 begins at a different time today. Coach Josh Frick’s team will take on Ballard Memorial (3-11) at home at 6 p.m. The Cougars (6-4) have won 6 of their last 8 games. The freshmen teams will play at 3, followed by the JV and then the varsities. WRUS will broadcast the varsity game with Zack Woodall and Ben Brown calling the action.

U.S. 41 train closure in Todd County extended

The railroad-related closure on U.S. 41 in Todd County has been extended, and the roadway is expected to remain closed until early next week, the state highway department has announced. The road remains closed between the City of Trenton in Todd County and the City of Pembroke in Christian County. Motorists should continue to seek alternate routes. The road was closed following a train derailment along the route on Tuesday. CSX Railroad crews remain on scene while site cleanup continues. More information will be released as available.

NCAAP hosting MLK Jubilee breakfast

The NAACP Russellville-Logan County Branch is sponsoring its annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Jubilee breakfast, recognition, and celebration on Saturday, Jan. 10,  beginning at 9 a.m. at the K of P Hall, 428 East 5th Street, Russellville. A traditional breakfast will be served for a modest donation of $7. The guest speaker is Rev. Jimmy L. Williams, who has a Legacy of Faith and Service and is pastor of Woodburn First Baptist Church.  The theme is “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” Local President William Woodard says, “Join the NAACP to receive and enjoy his message for the pleasure of celebrating the legacy of Dr. King.”

U.S. 41 reopens after train cleanup
U.S. 41 in Todd County has reopened following cleanup from a train derailment early last week. The road had been closed between the City of Trenton in Todd County and the City of Pembroke in Christian County while cleanup operations were underway. The roadway reopened Monday afternoon

Upgrades funded for Morgan Street railroad crossing

Safety improvements have been approved for funding on the Morgan Street railroad crossing in East Russellville, Gov. Andy Beshear has announced.  The signal and lights upgrade, which is expected to cost $203,000, is one of two for R.J. Corman crossings. The other is for Benson Valley Road in Simpson County. A total of seven projects were approved across the state, totaling $1.6 million.

Clinton County ends Panthers’ All A run

Clinton County’s Bulldogs beat Russellville 82-50 in the All A Classic Fourth Region semifinals Thursday. Panther junior Jamarion Gardner was named to the All-Tournament team and senior Jerius Coleman to the Academic team. The Panthers’ loss means the Clash of the Cats games will be played at Logan County High School Friday, as scheduled.

Parents required to attend 4-H Livestock meeting

When the Logan County 4-H Livestock Club meets Jan. 20, parents are required to attend if their 4-Her plans to be a participant in the ongoing Steer Show program. The meeting at the Logan County Extension Office will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Panthers win thriller in Clash

Trailing 29-23 at the half, the Russellville Lady Panthers outscored host Logan County 18-4 in the third quarter and withstood a Lady Cougar comeback to win the district Clash of the Lady Cats 56-53 Friday. DeMyiah Allen led Coach Jermaine Savages’ winners with 20 points. M’Riyah Boyd added 11, Aliza Wilson 10, Mariyah Merriweather 9 and Abby Riley  6. Leading Logan was Brenley Adler with 25 points, including 16 in the first half. Scoring 8 points each for Coach Dedra Adler’s team were Allisa Hampton & Reese Wetton.

Switzer’s super start spurs Cougars to big Clash win

Davis Switzer outscored visiting Russellville 14-7 to start the Clash of the Cats Friday. He had 18 points by the end of the first quarter and 25 at the end of Logan County’s 68-46 win in the district opener for both teams. Jaxon Tichenor had a tremendous third quarter and finished with 13 points. Reserve Damani Goodloe used his quickness and long-range shooting ability to add 12. Jamarion Gardner hustled all night and finished with 14 points. Labryan Nourse hit three straight shots in the third quarter and got the Panthers back in contention before Jeremiah Washington and Goodloe hit a pair of three-pointers. Nourse finished with 10 points.

Panthers bounce back big-time in win over F-S

After a lackluster performance a week earlier, the Russellville Panthers evened their district record at 1-1 Friday with an impressive 61-51 homecoming win over Franklin-Simpson. Coach Trey Tinsley's team trailed 39-34 after three quarters, but Panther senior Labryan Nourse scored eight straight points, and Jerius Coleman hit two straight 3-pointers, running his total to six for the game. They both scored 19 points. JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson put together a three-point play, Jamarion Gardner scored,and Amarus Morrow used his quickness all over the court. The Panthers ran their record to 12-5 overall. They are scheduled to play always powerful Bowling Green at Jim Young Gymnasium Saturday at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Cougars beat Rebels to go 2-0 in district

The Logan County Cougars broke open a close game Friday to complete a sweep by LCHS teams during homecoming. Coach Josh Frick's team led Todd Central by only three points (37-34) at halftime on freshman Joseph Mctire's 3-point bank shot at the buzzer. It was 51-39 after three quarters and then Davis Switzer finished off the tiring Rebels. Switzer finished with 22 points, Mctire 13 and Jaxon Tichenor 11. Todd was led by freshman Spencer Pool with 15 points. Connor Holder added 10 and John Ross Cardwell 9. The Cougars (10-8) are the only undefeated district boys team with a 2-0 record.

Lady Cougars earn running clock in district win

Freshman Anslee Buchanan clearly demonstrated how to take advantage of a rare start Friday. She hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and had 18 points in three quarters before Coach Dedra Adler began clearing her bench Logan County's 66-27 homecoming easier-than-anticipated win over Todd Central. The Lady Cougars came within a point of gaining a running clock late in the third quarter when Brenley Adler's scored on Alyssa Hampton's assist that made it 47-13. It wasn't until the last four minutes of the fourth quarter when eighth grader Landry Holloway hit her first two varsity goals to make it 64-27, starting the running clock. Hampton and Adler joined Buchanan in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively. Freshman Maliyah Merriweather scored 11 for the Lady Rebels while senior Ja'Mya Kay added 9.

Connector portion of Nashville Street to close briefly

A section of KY 2146 Nashville Street in the City of Russellville will temporarily close Thursday. An emergency utility pole repair will temporarily close a section of Nashville Street between 7th Street and 9th Street on Thursday, Jan. 22, from approximately 8 a.m. to noon. Motorists should seek an alternate route.

LCHS’ Pathway Showcase offered Feb. 3

Eighth Grade students who are planning/considering attending Logan County High School next year are invited to the school’s Pathway Showcase on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the LCHS Performing Arts Center and the Logan County Career and Technical Center from 4-6 p.m. Those attending will learn about the elective classes and career pathways available, meet current students and learn what they need to do in preparation to begin high school. Families are welcome to attend along with their rising freshman.

Logan moves into Highest Icing forecast area

From Logan County Emergency Management: Latest update. Big changes since yesterday. As of now, the NWS has Logan County in the area that could get some icing before the snow event. Not calling for much, but if it does, it could cause more potential of power outages. It also will lessen the amount of snow we get. With that being said, they still believe Logan County will get 8-12+ inches of snow. Of course, this could all change as the system gets closer to us. Our office will post next update tomorrow. Little League indoor camp postponed

From Logan County Little League Baseball and Softball: With the snow that’s being predicted, we have decided to move the 3 F’s camp from this Saturday (Jan. 24) to Feb. 7. Times will be the exact same, just on a different day now due to weather. Everyone have a fun and safe weekend!

Funeral services for Ronnie Steersman postponed

The Celebration of Life observance for the late Ronnie Stearsman has been postponed from this Saturday. Visitation will be next Saturday, March 7, in the chapel of Kirby Funeral Services Russellville from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a celebration of life at 1 p.m. with Bro. Jeff Martin and Bro. Danny Williams officiating. Burial with Military honors will take place at a later date at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville.

Donkey basketball planned at Adairville

Faculty, staff and community members will be the riders when Donkey Basketball is played at Adairville School on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $10. At the door, they will be $12.

Ball games still on tonight

The four schools in the 13th District are in agreement to play scheduled basketball games tonight despite impending bad weather sometime during the night. The Russellville-at-Todd doubleheader has been moved up an hour. The boys game, which is first this time, will begin at 5 p.m. The Logan County-at-Franklin-Simpson girls game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff. WRUS radio will carry all four games in a simulcast. The broadcast begins at 4:45 on 104.9 FM, 610 AM and on the internet at the WRUS app.

Todd takes 2 close games from RHS

Homestanding Todd Central squeezed out a pair of narrow district victories over Russellville Friday with the Rebels winning by three points (55-52) and the Lady Rebels by two (45-43). A pair of free throws each by Jayden Carrington and Noah Rager provided the tying and winning points for Todd Central’s boys. No statistics were announced except 19 points for Panther long-range shooter JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson, most of them coming in the first half… The Lady Panthers tied the score at 41-41 on a  McCoy goal after Todd’s Daymea Garrett gave her team the lead on a 3-pointer. Garrett hit a field goal and Ja’Mya Kay a free throw to clinch the win for the Lady Rebels. Scoring wasn’t announced, but Mariyah Merriweather and DeMyiah Allen combined to score 36 of the Lady Panthers’ 43 points. Regular starters M’Riyah Boyd and Aliza Wilson weren’t available for Coach Jermaine Savage… All four teams are now 1-2 in district play.

Scott Waste not picking up trash for 4th straight day

It's too cold for the snow and ice to melt from many streets and roads. For the fourth straight day, Scott Waste Services, which serves all of Logan County, will not pick up trash from its containers Thursday.

Clash still on tonight but Hall of Fame postponed

Logan County Basketball will be at Russellville High School tonight for the second Clash of the Cats of the season. The games will be played despite both schools having been closed for in-person classes all week snowy, icy, frigid weather. The Hall of Fame activities have been postponed until Feb. 13, however. The girls game starts at 6 p.m. with WRUS broadcasting both games of the Mullen-Meguiar Cats Classic live.

Adler leads Lady Cougars over RHS in Clash win

Avenging an earlier loss, the Logan County Lady Cougars won their district game at Russellville Friday in the Mullen-Meguiar Cats Classic. Reece Wetton broke open a 14-14 tie with three quick goals. The shooting of Myriah Merriweather and the hustle of Aliza Wilson and Abby Riley kept the Lady Panthers in contention. Brenley Adler was solid throughout and had 24 points in the 58-52 Lady Cougar win. Wetton scored 14, Anslee Buchanan 7, Alissa Hampton 6, Addison Holloway 5 and Avery Thompson 2 in the win. Merriweather scored 17, DeMiyah Allen 9, Riley and Wilson 8 each and Ja’eda Poindexter for RHS. Logan is 2-2 in the district and Russellville 1-3.

Cougars’ only lead comes at end of Clash

After trailing by nine points at the half and 12 points in the third quarter, the Logan County Cougars finally took their first lead at Russellville Friday with slightly over a minute left in the game. Maliq Ford scored on an assist from JB Mctire to put LCHS up 48-47. Then Mctire and Ford each hit a free throw to build a 50-47 lead. The Panthers’ Jamarion Gardner’s three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short to run Logan’s district record to 4-0. Cougar
