Shelton taking RHS to Greg Shelton Field
|
When Greg Shelton agreed to coach Russellville baseball last July, today was on the mind of many who have known him over the years. This afternoon Greg Shelton will lead his Panthers on to Greg Shelton Field where he coached Franklin-Simpson for 29 years. The Lewisburg native won 678 games at F-S, winning one state, two sectional, six regional, and eleven district championships. The Wildcats are now coached by one of his players, Craig Delk. Currently F-S is 15-8 and 4-0 in the 13th District. Russellville is 11-11 and 1-3 in the district, including a 7-0 loss to the Wildcats at Kelly Russell Field. In district play, the junior varsities take the field first and the varsity game is at night.

Student art show set at Saddle Factory
|
The Kentucky Artisans at the Saddle Factory will hold its third annual Student Art Show showcasing student art from local schools. Art will be on display from May 1 during regular store hours, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An Open House/Reception will be held on Sunday afternoon, May 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Historic Saddle Factory on East Fourth Street in Russellville. All are invited to attend to show support for these budding artists.

LCHS swimmers to sign with Campbellsville
|
Logan County High School seniors Tyler Vaughn and Devon Cross will sign their letters of Intent to swim collegiately at Campbellsville University on Thursday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in the Commons Area at the school, Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds has announced. Vaughn and Cross both swam for the Cougars, who were coached this year by Chris Donahue.

McKenzie, Brescia in conference tournament
|
Sophomore Will McKenzie, a graduate of Logan County High School, will be a key player for Coach David Ballou's Brescia Bearcats when they play in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference golf tournament Monday on the Gibson Bay course in Lexington. McKenzie has played either number one or two all season. McKenzie was medalist in the Brescia University Spring Shootout with his 71 leading the Bearcats to the championship. He joined teammates Chase Carrico & Hayden Young on the All-Tournament Team at the My Old Kentucky Home golf course in Bardstown. He was the Bearcats' lone all-tournament selection in the Berea Spring Invitational, shooting 77 & 73 on the Battlefield Gof Course in Richmond.

Offense of Dezarn & Smith not enough
|
After struggling at the plate in her previous game, senior Rebecca Dezarn broke out of her mini-slump Thursday by homering and driving in 3 runs for the Logan County Lady Cougars. Jonique Smith, the team's only other 12th grader, doubled among her 3 hits. And freshman catcher Reagan Cole was credited with 3 quality at-bats. It wasn't enough, though, as the Lady Cougars fell 8-3 at University Heights.

Hornets win CBL opener 118-98
|
Led by Vic Moses, Jamal Crook and Kahlil McDonald, the Bowling Green Hornets made the opening chapter of their existence as a professional basketball team a successful one by beating visiting Dayton 118-98 before an enthusiastic crowd at Russellville's Jim Young Gymasium Friday. Coach Otis Key's team showed strength, depth and great outside shooting skills in winning its first-ever Central Basketball League game. The team travels to St. Louis today. More details will appear on The LoJo in a future story.

Cornhole tournament Saturday to benefit RATC
|
A cornhole tournament will be held Saturday in the auxiliary gym at Logan County High School to benefit Russellville Area Technical Center Skills USA team. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and tournament action will begin at 11. The fee for the double elimination tournament is $20. Trophies will be given for the top three places. Procter pitches Panthers to district win
|
The Russellville Panthers banged out 9 hits and scored 10 runs in a 10-3 district win over visiting Todd Central Tuesday. Barrett Croslin, Corey Wright & Wesley Stratton each had 2 hits with Tyler Hall, Zack Denney & Colby Nichols getting one each. Croslin and Denney each scored 2 runs. Travis Kennedy, Crewston Kemp, Stratton, Hall, Wright & Nichols all scored. Wright doubled & Jacob Procter lofted a sacrifice fly. Procter pitched the win for Coach Greg Shelton’s team, giving up the 3 runs on 7 hits & 2 walks while striking out 11.

Franklin stops Cougar win streak 5-1
|
Visiting Franklin-Simpson ended Logan County’s 5-game winning streak Tuesday, beating the Cougars 5-1. Logan had won 13 of its last 16 games, but now Coach Craig Delk’s Wildcats are in first place in the district. Reed Caudill homered for the Wildcats and J.T. Aremann doubled. Daniel Beaty singled to lead off the seventh inning for Logan, and Joe Holliday doubled in pinch runner Luke Woodall with the home team’s only run. Cody Hunt followed with a walk, but the Cougars couldn’t get them home. Starting pitcher Caleb Bruner singled twice and Dustin Cartas got Logan’s only other hit. Hunter Britt pitched two scoreless, hitless innings in relief.

Tanner Clark to play for Centre College
|
Franklin-Simpson senior basketball player Tanner Clark has committed to Centre College, an NCAA Division III school. Clark led the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding, and free throw percent at 16 ppg, 5 rebounds, and 78 percent. Clark also became the 17th basketball player in Franklin-Simpson’s storied basketball history to score 1000 points. He ranks 14th on the All Time Scoring list with 1,085 points. Clark led 15-15 Franklin-Simpson to a 13th District runner-up spot and back to the 4th Region Basketball Tournament. Clark plans on majoring in Pre-Med. He is the son of Sebrena and David Clark, one of the most successful coaches in F-S history, and the grandson of former Auburn High School coach/principal Ronnie Clark, who is now mayor of Franklin, and his wife Joan.

Services set today for Ray Max Sanders
|
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. for former Logan County Jailer Ray Max Sanders, who died Friday at Auburn Health Care. He would have been 85 next week. He served as jailer from 1990-96 and also was a deputy sheriff. He was involved in Democratic politics along with his father, the late Clyde ‘Red’ Sanders, and his brother, former magistrate Clyde Nolan Sanders, who survives. Services will be at Summers, Kirby and Sanders Funeral Home, which was begun by his brother and sister-in-law, the late Jimmy and Kathleen Sanders. Holly Goddard Jones to be at Book Fest
|
Russellville High School graduate Holly Goddard Jones is scheduled to be among the authors who appear at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest at the Knicely Center on WKU's South Campus Saturday. Her first novel, The Next Time You See Me, was published by Simon & Schuster in February. She is the author of a highly acclaimed collection of short stories, Girl Trouble, which was published by Harper Perennial in 2009. In 2007, she received the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award, which honors six emerging women fiction writers annually. She teaches graduate courses in creative writing at UNC Greensboro. Her writing has appeared in a number of highly respected collections and journals. Among the writers at the Book Fest is Henry Winkler, best known as Fonzie on the television show “Happy Days.”

|
Dustin Cartas powered 2 home runs among his 3 hits and Caleb Bruner also homered as the Logan County Cougars won 4-2 at Allen County-Scottsville. Ian Woodall doubled in his brother, Luke Woodall. Cody Hunt doubled among his two hits while Gage Hales, Matt Harper & Joe Holliday also got hits. Hunter Britt pitched the win with Harper getting the final two outs in relief. Tanner Mutter, Justin Spears, Evan Day & Jacob Stewart each had 2 hits for Coach Tim Stamper's Patriots.

Lady Cougars fall despite Smith's homer
|
Jonique Smith homered and Victoria Cates hit an RBI double, but the Logan County Lady Cougars lost 6-2 at Barren County Thursday. Cates added another hit while Maddie Abbott & Shelby Browning also singled. Shelby Milam pitched the first five innings and Megan Ferguson worked a scoreless inning in relief.

Prolific author to appear at Auburn School
|
Author Debbie Dadey will be at Auburn School, Thursday, April 18. She has published over 150 books and is well known for the Bailey School series. She is one of the featured authors at the SOKY Book Festival this weekend sharing her new series, The Mermaid Tales. From 12:50-1:35 she will present to K-2nd students in the gym. From 1:35-1:50 she will be part of a group photo with all students who bought a book to be autographed. Then from 1:50-2:50 she will make a presentation for 3rd-5th graders in the school gym, according to librarian Carla Abbott.
