Drake Duncan leading Pickens Amateur event
|
|
Drake Duncan was a co-leader of the Pickens Amateur golf tournament in Bowling Green going into the final round Sunday at Crosswinds Golf Course. The son of former Russellville High School golfer David Duncan and the grandson of Buddy and Mattie Duncan of Russellville, the former South Warren High School star now plays for Middle Tennessee State University. He missed the spring season after undergoing back surgery in January, and this is his first competitive event since then. He tied J.R. Cook and WKU golfer Brandon Beckham with a 5-under-par 67 Saturday.

St. Louis beats Hornets for CBL title
|
|
The St. Louis Hawks beat the visiting Bowling Green Hornets 107-96 Saturday night in the championship game of the first season of the Central Basketball League. Coach Otis Key's team had to finish the game without its two All-Stars. Leading scorer Justin Taylor suffered a knee injury early in the game, was carted from the floor and was hospitalized. Center Tony Key was ejected from the game in the third quarter.

Tony Key named to CBL honor squad
|
|
The Central Basketball League has announced All-Star selections, and two Bowling Green Hornets players were selected. They are Justin Taylor, who averaged 19.3 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 3.4 APG, and 2.4 SPG during the regular season; and former Russellville Panther Tony Key, who averaged 12.0 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 4.3 BPG. The Hornets play in the Championship Game Saturday against the Hawks in St. Louis at 7 p.m.

Prison reformer Judge Johnstone dies
|
|
Best known for his rulings which led to vast improvements in the Kentucky prison system, retired federal Judge Edward Johnstone died in Louisville this week at age 91. He was appointed federal judge for Western Kentucky by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 and served for 30 years. He was the husband of Logan County native Katherine 'Kay' Johnstone and the brother-in-law of the late Bill and Bob Guion. He is survived locally by his nephew, David Guion, and his sisters-in-law, Nancy and Joyce Guion.

Standard, Dowell dominate KPA ad awards
|
|
The Todd County Standard has received the highest award for General Excellence in the Advertising Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers contest conducted by the Kentucky Press Association for the sixth time in seven years. Ad designer Marty Dowell of Russellville won 13 awards, including five first places. Ryan Craig of Russellville is editor/publisher of the Standard and his wife, Jenni Osborne Craig, is advertising manager.

School art supplies to be collected

Logan County Adult Education will hold a public graduation ceremony this Sunday, June 30 in the Logan County High School Commons Area at 3 p.m. The most recent Adult Ed students to earn their GED’s will be honored. Panthers quell Storm, Hornets reach finals
|
|
The River City Panthers of the Central Basketball League defeated the Middle Tennessee Storm 121-115 in Peoria, Ill. Sunday. The loss eliminated the Storm, who started the season 4-0 but lost three consecutive games to end the season. Two of the losses were to the Russellville-based Bowling Green Hornets, who clinched the second spot for the Championship Game this Saturday night in Missouri. The St. Louis Hawks (5-2) will host the title game versus the Hornets (4-3) at Harris Stowe State University. The Hawks are coached by Russellville’s Otis Key, who previously won a professional league as coach of the Kentucky Bison. Waseem Moorad is owner and general manager.

Summer Much Box distribution day Friday
|
|
Friday will mark the second distribution day for the Summer Munch Box program at Auburn Baptist Church. Anyone whose child receives food from the backpack program at Auburn or Chandlers School should have received a folder with vouchers in it. Those vouchers must be presented by those who come to the church and receive a box of food for their child, according to Kim Meador Womack, who heads the program along with Rachel Hance. Delivery is also available but recipients will need to present the voucher also. This will be every two weeks this summer. The LoJo carried a Feature Article in May which explains the program.

Doris Vick named Hometown Hero by WBKO
|
|
This has been a special day for Doris Vick. At mid-day, Logan County Judge/Executive Logan Chick led a fund raising effort for the Concerned Citizens of Logan County, which she heads. The money raised will help the group qualify for food to distribute to those in need. At Logan County High School, Reach Workcamps staff members were setting up for almost 300 teens who will be here for a week doing repair work on homes in Logan County. Vick was the group's contact person here, helping find those who need assistance. Then tonight on Channel 13 newscasts, she will be introduced as WBKO's Hometown Hero for this week. It's a day to remember for Doris Vick.

Procter, Bruner & Harper chosen for baseball Sophomore Showcase in Louisville

Three outstanding younger baseball players from the Land of Logan have been invited to play in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Sophomore Showcase at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville next Tuesday. They are Jacob Procter of Russellville High School and Matt Harper and Caleb Bruner of Logan County High School. All three pitch and also are position players.

Cookout to help Concerned Citizens of Logan County Feed the Children
|

The role Concerned Citizens of Logan County plays in the lives of many Russellvillians was emphasized in a story by Alyssa Harvey in the Bowling Green Daily News Tuesday. The organization needs to raise $8,200 to supply boxes to be delivered to 400 families by Feed the Children, according to Executive Director Doris Vick. A cookout will be held at the Main Street courtyard of First Southern National Bank Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to raise money for the group, which also provides tutoring and a food bank. Severe storm, maybe tornado, attacks South Logan
|
|
What is believed to have been a tornado struck South Logan Tuesday afternoon, doing major damage from Schochoh to Dot and beyond. Much of the most severely affected area is part of the massive Robey Farms. The historic Robey farmhouse in the Red River Meeting House area on KY 663 was destroyed by the strong winds, and matriarch Jane Robey was home. No major injuries have been reported. That road had to be closed for several hours because of cleanup and what Greg Merideth of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said was a possible gas leak. David Kitchens of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office reports traffic has been heavy in the area from sightseers. Gay Davis, who is part of the family that operates Adairville Hardware, reports that the storm traveled above downtown Adairville. The J.B. Atkinson home on the other side of Adairville at Dot also suffered major damage. The storm was covered extensively by Nashville media, and it was the lead story nationally on ABC Radio News. Logan County Emergency Services Director Terry Cole was interviewed by several media outlets, both in the area and nationally.

Will McKenzie qualifies for state am
|
|
Will McKenzie of Russellville has qualified for the Kentucky State Amateur Championship golf tournament, which will be played at Bowling Green Country Club June 18-20. It was on that same course that McKenzie shot 73 Saturday to tie for third among area qualifiers. A former Logan County High School number one golfer, McKenzie is now one of the top members of the Brescia University team. He had seriously considered transferring to Western Kentucky University this year but has decided to remain at the Owensboro college.

College and Career Awareness Day Thursday
|

Logan County Adult Education and Educational Opportunity Centers will host College and Career Awareness Day on Thursday, June 13 from 10 a.m..-2 p.m.at the Logan County Professional Learning Center located at 121 South Spring Street. This event is free and all are welcome. Participants can meet area college/technical school reps, learn how to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate for employment opportunities and meet Adult Ed staff to discuss Fall Classes. Also, Adult Education will have sack lunches for sale for $6. The meal includes choice of hamburger or two hot dogs, chips, cookie and a drink. Call 726-8777 to pre-order sack lunches by June 12. Deliveries of five or more lunches will be available for Russellville area. Proceeds will benefit GED Scholarship Fund.

Greenwood wins state softball title
|
|
The Greenwood Lady Gators not only became state softball champions Saturday, but Coach Penny Reece's team finished with a perfect 44-0 record, the most wins in state history. GHS beat Owensboro Catholic 8-0 in the finals and outscored their state opponents 44-4. Former Auburn resident Aeron Smith was named all-state tournament despite playing with a separated shoulder. Fellow juniors Elizabeth Moss and Raley Slone were also named all-state tournament and Moss, the pitcher, was MVP.

Squeaky, Siakam on court for Hornets tonight

The Bowling Green Hornets will play their final home game of the season tonight at 8 p.m. at Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium. General Manager Waseem Moorad has announced the addition of former Caverna and WKU standout Boris Siakam, a key player on the Toppers' Sweet Sixteen team in 2008. He has played overseas the past five years. Former Russellville stars Squeaky Hampton and Tony Key are scheduled to play for the Hornets, who are coached by another ex-Panther, Otis Key. The opponent is undefeated Middle Tennessee. The Hornets' have promised a gift to all who attend. Standouts from the Hornets' camp led by Coach Nathan Thompson and Hampton will be recognized, as well the regional baseball champion Logan County Cougars.

America's Got Talent to tape in Lewisburg
|

The headline performer at the Purple Martin Festival in Lewisburg this weekend has already shown America his talent this week. And now the television program America’s Got Talent may show viewers what Lewisburg living is like. Marty Brown advanced on the show June 4 and drew standing ovations from judges Howard Stern and Howie Mandell. Mayor Tina Callahan-Dye has learned that not only will he perform at the Lions Club Pavillion at McKinney Park Saturday at 6 p.m. but his wife Shellie has notified Purple Martin Festival organizers that she will be bringing AGT cameras to record part of the evening for the television show. Smith catches as Lady Gators win
|

With Aeron Smith in her regular role as catcher, the Greenwood Lady Gators beat South Laurel 7-1 in the opening round of the Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament at Owensboro Thursday. The win was the 40th of the season without a loss for Coach Penny Reece's team, which is ranked third in the nation. Smith, who suffered a shoulder separation in the post-game celebration after the regional championship win over Bowling Green, underwent extensive therapy this week and played the entire game. The injury seemed to affect her batting, but she picked off two baserunners, according to her dad, Russellville High grad Tim Smith. The Lady Gators, who need four more wins to become state champions, play Covington Notre Dame Friday at 9 a.m.

The Logan County Cougars were within one strike of recording a major upset in the state baseball tournament in Lexington Tuesday but came up just short in a 2-1 loss to the state's second-ranked team, Louisville St. Xavier. Sophomore Caleb Bruner pitched seven and two-thirds innings of no-hit shutout ball and had two strikes on what could have been the game's final batter. However, he hit Nate Stemle with the 0-2 pitch. Then came a double down the third baseline, an intentional walk, a physical error and a mental error that scored two runs for the Tigers. The Cougars had taken the lead in the top of the first extra inning on hits by Chris Cartas & Cody Hunt, aided by a sacrifice bunt by Matt Harper in between. Joe Holliday was on base three times, including recording the team's only other hit. "You'll never see a better game in the state tournament than this one," the play-by-play announcer on the KHSAA internet television network said. Coach Andy Porta's Tigers improved to 35-4 and advanced to a quarterfinals matchup with fellow Louisville school Pleasure Ridge Park. Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars finished 26-11.

Aeron Smith injured in title celebration
|
|
Former Logan County Lady Cougar Aeron Smith was injured in the celebration of her Greenwood Lady Gators winning the regional softball championship Thursday. Smith, who was named most valuable player in both the district and regional tournaments, suffered a Grade 1 separation of her non-throwing shoulder as she and teammates gathered on the mound following their win over Bowling Green at WKU. She collided with teammate Angie Atkins and lost her balance. Her dad, Tim Smith, says Dr. Craig Beard is working to get her ready for GHS' first game at state Thursday against South Laurel, but her status is unclear. Coach Penny Reece's Lady Gators are 39-0 and ranked third in the nation. Smith doubled twice in the championship game. She had driven in both runs in a pair of 1-0 wins by the Lady Gators on a recent Saturday. She set the Greenwood RBI record two-thirds of the way through the season.
