Hopson leaving task force after being named Simpson County’s sheriff

Jere Dee Hopson, who is director of the South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force, has been appointed sheriff of his native Simpson County by Judge-Executive Jim Henderson. He has succeeded Sheriff Chris Cline, who resigned Saturday for health reasons. Hopson has filed his candidacy papers for a full four-year term. Cline had filed earlier, but it's not known yet if he will stay in the race. Hopson told the Franklin Favorite that he will continue to work with the task force, which serves Logan and Simpson counties, until his successor is named. A retired state police trooper, Hopson is the son of Russellville natives, the late Jere and Sally McCormick Hopson. The original drug task force leader, Jerry Smith, is also a retired state police officer.
