Valedictorian Logan Johnson and salutatorian Grace Harris topped a graduating class which set high academic marks for future LCHS classes to try to duplicate or surpass.

Commencement exercises were observed Tuesday at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

Over 100 seniors were recognized as either honors students, BETA club members or other scholarship and award winners.

“The accomplishments of this class are impressive, some marking the highest achievements of any class graduating from LCHS,” announced Principal Casey Jaynes. “This class as a group scored a composite of 17.6 on the PLAN as sophomores, the highest of any class in LCHS history. As juniors they also scored a composite of 19.8 on the ACT, which is also the highest in school history and ranked LCHS at 58th in the state out of 231 high schools.”

A breakdown of the individual areas of the ACT is as follows: 19.0 in English, 69th in the state; 19.5 in Math, tied for 42nd in the state; Reading was ta 20.2, tied for 55th in the state; and Science was a 20.1, tied for 53rd in the state.

The class of 2013 also set a new standard for college and career readiness as measured by the Kentucky Department of Education and the Council for Post-Secondary Education, since

159 out of 239 are College Ready by meeting benchmarks in English, Math and Reading on the ACT or passing appropriate portions of the COMPASS assessment; 33 are Career Ready by meeting two requirements, an academic component as measured by passing the ACT WorkKeys assessment, the ASVAB and by fulfilling the career requirement of passing the KOSSA or obtaining and industry certificate.

“A total of106 seniors of the class of 2014 are both college and career ready earning LCHS and extra .5 point on the KPREP accountability model for high schools,” Jaynes added.

In addition to all of those record setting accomplishments this class also took about 444 Advance Placement classes during their high school career.  These students took classes in AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Government, AP US History, AP Literature, AP Language, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science and AP Calculus.  Last year there were 222 AP exams given and this year there were 318 exams given. Last year our pass rate on AP exams almost doubled so we cannot wait to see how this year turns out.

“In addition to challenging themselves with AP course work and exams, this group took over 330 dual credit courses through WKU, SKYCTC and MSU.  The courses we offer on our campus are Psy 100, EDU 250, ENG 100, Music Appreciation, Speech 161 Western Civ 119 and 120, Math 116, Chinese 1 and Chinese 2 and Personal Finance 161,” Jaynes said.

“Parents you spent approximately $66,000 in tuition monies for these classes. If you were to take a 3 hour class at WKU this summer it would cost you $1090. This group of seniors should have spent about $359,726 in tuition over the last two years. By taking these courses in high school they saved their parents about $293,786.  Also some of these students will go into college as second semester freshmen and some as sophomores, which will also save our parents costs of room and board for maybe a year.”

Jaynes recognized and thanked retiring Superintendent Marshall Kemp, senior guidance counselor David Brooks and fellow counselors Amy Hallman and Sheryl Speck, school secretary Debbie Brown, guidance secretary Glenna Johnson and Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds and the school custodians for setting up for commencement at Diddle. \

David Brooks announced the following awards:.
