EPB smartnet, Russellville’s municipally-owned fiber-to-the-premises network announced at Monday’s 11th Annual Kentucky Cable and Telecommunications Conference in Lexington, that the first 1 Gigabit broadband service in Kentucky will now be available for both residential and business customers beginning Sept. 1, 2014.
EPB smartnet operates a high-speed optical fiber network that today offers services to over 4,000 homes and businesses in the Russellville area. With its 1 Gigabit service offering, Russellville joins a handful of other “Gig” cities offering the fastest broadband service in the country, and is tied with a few international communities for fastest in the world. In addition, Russellville has been recognized as offering the fastest average internet speeds in the Commonwealth.
With EPB smartnet’s announcement of 1 Gigabit service, Russellville is now 10 times faster and more than 5 years ahead of FCC’s National Broadband Plan calling for 100 Mbps speeds for 260 million households nationwide by 2020.
“We are so excited to offer to our residential customers the same access to Gigabit broadband service that we offered to business customers last fall.” said Robert White, general manager of EPB smartnet. “We are committed to sustaining an advanced communications network capable of providing Gigabit speeds without the need of data caps on usage.”
