Reconstruction Revisited theme of MLK Unity Walk Friday

The 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Unity Walk will be held this Friday morning, beginning at 8:15 at the historic Bank Street AME Church at 564 East Fifth Street in Russellville. The walk will proceed to the historic Logan County Courthouse where the program will be held up stairs.

The theme is "Reconstruction Revisited." The speaker will be Dr. Sherwood Thompson, a professor in the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies where he conducts research and teaches courses on educational leadership, post-secondary educational trends, organizational development and race and social justice.

Dr. Thompson has directed campus-wide diversity programs for three Carnegie Foundation Division-I public research universities. He was active in the civil rights movement of the late 60s in the South. He was president of the Community Action Team, a bi-racial civil rights youth organization. He also served as the Field Secretary of the Grassrooters Interested in Poverty Elimination, an organization born out of the Poor Peoples March in Washington. He has also testified before Congress. He has served as a Goodwill Ambassador/United Nations Non-Governmental Organization representative.

“The Logan County and Russellville High school systems, parents, churches, businesses, civic, organizations, government, elected officials and community representatives are walking, attending and strengthening this educational experience for our youth in a question and answer session in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s philosophies,” says Marvinia Neblett of Community Projects Inc.
