At each month’s meeting of the Logan County Board of Education, each school presents a list of “Good News” items. The following is from the April meeting:
Adairville 8th grader John Hendricks shared about his experiences with KYA (Kentucky Youth Assembly) and KUNA (Kentucky United Nations Assembly). He also presented the first installment of The Adairville News, a new project that KYA and KUNA students have undertaken. The Adairville News is a weekly news program that includes features such as weather, birthdays, upcoming events, teacher of the week, and student of the week.
District:
All five preschool sites have completed one portion of the P2R program review, which is designed to help improve teaching and learning environments within Kentucky’s preschool classrooms. Five of the six preschool centers were reviewed using the ECERS-R, an early childhood environmental rating scale. The centers were evaluated against 43 indicators, with a score from 1 (poor) to 7 (excellent). Each classroom evaluated was given a composite score, with a similar rating of 1 to 7. Any site with a score of 5 or better is considered to be in the excellent category. All five classrooms scored within this category, with individual scores ranking from 6.07 to 6.24.
Adairville:
The Middle School Choir was invited to the Adairville City Hall to sing “My Old Kentucky Home” and “The National Anthem” during a special ceremony held in celebration of the city being awarded a grant of over a half million dollars to be used to improve the water system in the city. The students performed for Lt. Governor Crit Luallen; our state representative and former Adairville School student, Martha Jane King; Adairville Mayor Donna Blake; our city council; and other local and state leaders.
Choir members are? Grace Richardson, Rylee Hobbs, Aly Dotson, Sydnee Jones, Kayleigh Laurent, Larkin Shoulders, Chloe Farmer, Emma Prince, Emma Jenkins, Bailey Howell, Bridgette Farmer, Paige Hailey, Mason Freeman, Bennie Guzman, Praiden Brown and Morgan Scruggs. Adairville students also led the group in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Those students were Alton Hallman, Jenna and Emma Robertson, Carson & Aydan Trimble, and Lucy & Ella Violette.
Eighteen 7th and 8th graders attended the Kentucky United Nations Assembly in Louisville. They represented the country of Barbados and proposed the clean-up of current waste. While the ambassadors ultimately defeated the proposal by a narrow margin of only two votes, our students represented very well. Ellie Delaney received the Outstanding Delegate Award, and Adairville KUNA received a Delegation of Excellence Award.
Members of the KUNA team are Lindsay Allen, Lauren Barnes, Olivia Bouldin, Shelby Byrum, Brennan Davenport, Korbin DeBerry, Ellie Delaney, Austin Epley, Roy Flores, Brittany Garrett, Keyleigh Harlan, John Hendricks, Katie Ray Holloman, Myles Kenner, Gracie Knuckles, Emma Macy, McKenna Smith, and Damon Stephens.
The Elementary Academic Team competed at the Regional Governor’s Cup at Longest Elementary in Muhlenberg County with 18 other surrounding elementary schools. In only their second year competing, this group of students came in second place overall. The Future Problem Solving team placed second. Students on this team are Dustin Brown, Joshua Lawrence, Eva Bouldin, and Emma Robertson. Maddix Mowles placed fifth in written composition, Joshua Lawrence placed fourth in social studies, and Eva Bouldin placed second in arts and humanities. The team was also awarded the Katherine Hume Sportsmanship award.
Auburn:
Auburn Junior Beta Club attended the State Convention in Louisville, Kentucky on March 23 - 25 with 73 seventh and eighth grade students participating in the event. Over twenty students participated in the arts and crafts competition, four students competed in Quiz Bowl academic contest, thirty students participated in group talent and four students competed in “Tower of Power.” Overall, the Auburn Junior Beta was very successful.
Jillian McLellan, Bella Bond and Kate Malott placed first in the poster competition; Tanner Morrow placed third in the Social Studies written assessment; the Quiz Bowl team - Louis Scott, Tanner Morrow, Sarah Cassady and Christian Hines - was state runner-up. They now have the opportunity to compete at the National Beta Convention in Nashville this summer.
Auburn Middle School Robotics hosted the Regional RCX tournament on March 14th with over 20 teams competing. Auburn had two teams place first and third, which qualified them to compete at the State Tournament in Lexington. These two teams finished in the top 10 while competing at Rupp Arena.
Auburn's KUNA (KY United Nations Assembly) competed in Louisville on March 19-21. The KUNA team works to produce solutions for world issues.
A resolution produced by Sarah Cassady and Andrea Hinojoza to add a branch to the United Nations Office of Drug and Crime to stop human trafficking was passed at the KUNA conference. In addition, Sarah received an Outstanding Delegation Award, and Andrea received an Outstanding Speaker Award out of the 700 presenting students.
Auburn's KUNA team placed in the TOP 10 for Most Community Service Points for the entire state of Kentucky through the YMCA. They collected shoes for the Waterstep program, had Thanksgiving and Easter Food Drives and led the Student Leadership programs.
Auburn’s Kindergarten through fifth grade students were visited by a Holstein cow, Jet, from Southerland Dairy Farms on April 16. Students were able to learn where milk originates and the multitude of products produced from milk.
Chandlers:
The Bionic Bears middle school robotics team placed 12th in the RCX State Tournament at Rupp Arena in late March and were part of a feature on Louisville’s WHAS television station.
Over 50 K-8 young ladies took part in a STEM afternoon organized by faculty and staff members, focusing on career interests in these fields.
Lewisburg:
On March 16- 18, the Lewisburg Jr. Beta Club attended the State Jr. Beta Convention in Louisville, KY. Students participated in several events including Arts and Crafts, Academic Exams, Scrapbook, and Songfest. Sylas Morris placed third in the Spelling Exam, which qualifies him to compete at the National Convention in June. The entire club placed second overall out of 29 clubs in the Songfest Competition, which also qualifies them to compete at Nationals. Songfest requires students to take a well-known song, rewrite the words to fit the theme of convention and showcase what Beta Club is all about. Then they add hand/upper body movements to the song, while keeping their feet stationary and perform that song at convention. This year’s theme was “Betas: Rockin’ The Country,” and a committee made up of Maria Wells, Addie White, Makayla Strode and Hannah Goss wrote words to the tune of “Lips Are Movin’” by Meghan Trainor. The National Convention will be held in Nashville at the Opryland Hotel on June 25- 29.
Sam Northern, Language Arts teacher, was selected as a 2015 KEA Diversity Committee Lesson Plan contest winner. The lesson plan focused on Chinese culture while applying reading and writing skills. Mr. Northern was honored at a special dinner in Louisville on April 9 for his achievement.
Lewisburg Elementary third and fourth graders have had the opportunity to participate in the school’s art club this year. These students and their club sponsor, Mrs. Grace Siegert, have met after school on Fridays to create several different types and pieces of art. We were honored to have 75 people in attendance on the evening of March 19 at their art gallery night as these student leaders displayed their hard work.
Three Lewisburg students were named Conservation Art Contest Winners -- Brooke Jenkins, 1st; Kylie Lawson, 2nd; and Cade Johnson, 3rd.
Olmstead:
The Olmstead Middle School band received all distinguished ratings at the KMEA festival in Bowling Green on Thursday, April 16.
Middle school language arts teacher Justin Adams has had poems recently selected for publication in creative writing journals The Round Table and Pensworth, which are both set to release at the end of April.
On Thursday, March 19, grades K-3 held a Math and Reading Night. Students were engaged in math and reading games and activities while parents attended teacher-led workshops in the classroom about strategies for assisting their children with reading and math. Third grade also had a science fair that night and shared their science projects.
Olmstead School raised $3,800 in February during Jump Rope for Heart and the American Heart Association.
LCHS:
Caleb Williams has auditioned for the KMEA 3rd District All-District Jazz Band and was selected as the 1st chair and Lead Trombone player! He will spend a weekend with the top jazz musicians in 3rd District rehearsing and performing at the end of April!
Congratulations to senior Jackson Wells, junior Kayla Pfistner (March); sophomore Paige Jones and freshman Garrett Wilhelm (February). They are the latest Attendance for Academic Success contest winners! Each student received a $15 Taco Bell or $15 Subway gift card and Academic Success medallions!
Forty LCHS Band students attended the KMEA Third District Solo & Ensemble Festival. Four students qualified to play solos at the KMEA State Solo & Ensemble Festival in May; fourteen students received a Distinguished Solos; three students received Proficient Ensembles and five students received Proficient Solos. This is the first time in the history of the school that LCHS has had students participate at the state level. The students are Caleb Williams, Zoe Beasley, Angus Moore and Zack Skotak.
In addition, Nick Manning is the first guitar student in the history of LCHS to attend the KMEA Third District Solo & Ensemble Festival, and he received a Distinguished Rating!
The LCHS DECA Chapter placed second in the state for the largest increase in membership from last year, with an increase of 97 percent. The following students also placed at the DECA State Conference: Isiah Price, second in Business Finance; Austin Gregory, third in KY Marketing Principles; Nikki Crafton, fourth in Principles of Finance; Ali Davis, fifth in Principles of Finance; Alexis Chick, sixth in Principles of Marketing and Monica Hines, sixth in Principles of Finance. In addition, Brianna Winn was the Outstanding DECA Member of the Year.
On March 31, LCHS FFA sent 2015-2016 President Morgan Hunt, 2014-2015 President Wesley Estes and delegates Ashley Brinkley and Kenton Howard to WKU to run for regional and state offices. After an interview process, Morgan Hunt was named the 2015-2016 Regional Treasurer, and Wesley Estes was nominated to represent the Barren River Region and run for state office at State Convention in Lexington this summer.

One student has completed 1.5 credits toward graduation, and the remaining students are setting goals and obtaining passing grades on courses to complete by end of May.
RATC:
Seven students competed in the FBLA Conference in Louisville on April 20 – 22.
Twenty-two students competed in the SkillsUSA Leadership Conference held in Louisville on April 22 – 25.
RATC will hold an Awards Night ceremony to celebrate the successes of its students at the UK Extension office on April 30 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
