Logan County High School Principal Casey Jaynes has announced that Greg Howard will be the next Athletic Director (AD) at Logan County High School
Howard has over 39 years of coaching experience and has taught for 23 years. He has been the long-time track and field and cross-country coach for LCHS. He has a varied coaching past including coaching basketball at LCHS and Todd County High School. He has served in a variety of leadership positions including president of the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association and as a member of the KHSAA Track and Cross Country Advisory Committee.
He was basketball coach at Chandlers Middle School when new LCHS basketball coach Ray Maggard tabbed him to be his assistant. Their first year on the job they guided the Cougars to the regional finals in 1997. After Maggard left, Howard continued as assistant coach under Mike Haynes, who had previously coached the Lady Cougars to the state quarterfinals twice.
Howard left briefly to be head girls coach at Todd Central and a few years later was hired to be head girls coach at Franklin-Simpson. But instead of staying on that job, he returned to LCHS to be Haynes’ assistant with the boys again.
When Haynes relinquished his coaching duties, Howard became head coach of the boys basketball team. He held that position from 2002-2005.
He has had great success in cross country, winning consecutive regional team championships and coaching Sye Head to a second-place finish at state. His track teams in the spring are always competitive. His Lady Cougars won a major track meet at Western Kentucky University recently.
Casey Jaynes said, “I would like to thank the following members of the AD search committee for their work on the process of selecting the next athletic director for LCHS. Their input and expertise into the process was a valuable resource for selecting what we believe was the best candidate for LCHS.”

Steve Duncan- Head Football Coach for LCHS
Danette Wright – parent of senior Ben Wright and sophomore Jack Wright who has dedicated numerous hours to our basketball, baseball and golf programs.
Kyle Hines – President of the Logan County Cougar Foundation
Dr. Kevin Hub – Logan County Superintendent.
Over 20 people applied for the LCHS AD position from various parts of Kentucky and across the nation. The LCHS coaching staff and the Logan County Booster Club and the Logan County Cougar Foundation were asked for their input as to the types of characteristics they would like to see in the next AD. The committee met and took these recommendations and discussed various qualities and characteristics that they would like to see in the next AD for LCHS.
From the 20 people who applied, the committee selected six to interview. “After the interview process was complete it was evident by the committee that Greg Howard to be selected as the next AD of LCHS,” Jaynes said.
Coach Howard succeeds long time AD Hugh McReynolds who decided to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

As a parent of two Logan County students involved in athletics, I am very pleased with the committee’s decision to select Coach Howard as the new Athletic Director. He was a clear choice based on his commitment and zeal for the student athletes. I was very impressed with his vision for our Athletic Department and really looking forward to seeing him implement that vision and the effect that it has on our programs. “
Mark Wood said, “Coach Howard has done an amazing job with our Track and Cross Country programs. His passion for athletics is infectious and I can't wait to see where he will help lead our athletic program in the future.”
One of his former athletes, Markita Pheal, wrote, “I thank God for blessing me with people like you in my life. Having you for my high school track coach was priceless. You did not only teach me how to be better at a great sport but also how to better myself in life. You have been there and help me in SO many ways. I look up to like a dad.”
Daniele Brown wrote: “You have done so much for programs at Logan County that no one else seemed to care about!!! This is the perfect job for you, Coach!”
Cameron Gunderson wrote, “Just wanted to give a huge shout out to one of the most respected gentleman in Logan County High School! Congrats Coach Howard for your new role as AD! It's been a long time coming.”
