The Logan County Board of Education has agreed to a performance-based guaranteed energy savings project that will guarantee energy and operational savings for the district. The program allows the district to defer a large amount of capital monies by generating savings from the operating budget and using those savings to pay for the capital improvements. During a work session, the Board of Education and representatives from Trane met to determine project scope.
“This will be a great opportunity for Logan County Schools to address much needed upgrades and improve the learning environment,” said Dr. Kevin Hub, superintendent. “This will be the second performance-based guaranteed energy savings project that we have done with Trane. In the first project, we saved more than $1 million in energy expenses, which was nearly $300,000 more than the targeted cumulative energy savings that Trane guaranteed.”

Harshaw Trane, a Kentucky-based, intelligent-building technology and energy services provider, will implement projects to improve the learning environment for both staff and students that include temperature controls, better air quality and improved lighting levels. Logan County Schools will be among the first school districts in Kentucky to have elementary schools with LED lighting in the learning environment.
Trane’s proposal includes HVAC upgrades, energy efficient windows and new ceiling tiles at Adairville School, the addition of geothermal well fields at Olmstead School and Chandlers School, interior and exterior upgrades to LED fixtures throughout the district and other energy efficiency measures that will provide the district with system reliability and centralized control, energy efficiency, a reduced carbon footprint and student and staff overall comfort as well as the potential for ENERGY STAR schools.
“What excites me most is that this $8.2 million project will be funded using $3.3 million of state funds, and the remaining $5 million will be funded through annual guaranteed energy savings.” said Hub.
