A Russellville business that has become an area landmark has been chosen for a major state honor.
Roy’s Bar-B-Q will receive the Dr. Rudy G. Ellis Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Association at its
meeting in late April.
The restaurant was jointly nominated for the award by Logan County, Russellville and Franklin-Simpson high schools. Roy’s helps each of the three
schools in a number of ways, including catering meals at many special occasions. Whenever there is a
need, Roy’s is willing to help however possible.
LCHS Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds, who coordinated the nomination process, explains that the award is given in recognition of “Roy’s
continued and ongoing support of high school athletics in the area.”
“Roy Morgan and Roy’s BBQ are always willing to do their part in helping our schools and students achieve at higher levels,” says John Myers,
principal and football coach at RHS.
“Roy and his staff want to see our schools succeed and are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to see that happen. I have never called
upon Roy’s BBQ and not been treated fairly and honestly. This business and these people are truly a blessing to the entire community.”
Franklin-Simpson Athletic Director/Football Coach Tim Schlosser said, "Roy's BBQ has been a temendous supporter of high school athletics for
years. They have supported Franklin-Simpson football for the past 11
years. They have provided financial support and food for many occasions for the football program. In my four years as 4th region tournament manager for
basketball they have provided food for the championship night of both the boys' and girls' tournament. Roy's BBQ is a true supporter of high school
athletics in the 4th region."
Roger Morgan, Kathy Morgan Howard and Lee Ann Morgan Harris are partners with their brother Roy and their mother, Jolene Morgan. Roy’s Bar-B-Q was
the brainchild of their late father and husband, Ralph Morgan, 26 years ago. After outgrowing two locations on the Lewisburg Road on the north side of
Russellville, the popular eatery and gathering place moved to its current 3,300-square feet site in west Russellville in 1998. A second location-known
as “the little pit” and emphasizing takeout meals-has been in operation in east Russellville since 1987.
Roy’s is a family business not only in ownership but also in operation. Many of the employees are either related to the Morgans or related to each
other.
Dr. Rudy Ellis has long been associated with University of Louisville athletics.
The award will be presented at the KHSADA Annual Awards Banquet Thursday, April 23, at the Brown and Williamson Room of Papa John’s Stadium in
Louisville.
“We’re grateful to the schools for nominating us and are pleased that the athletic directors’ association chose us for this award,” Roy Morgan
said. “We enjoy working with the schools and appreciate the support and business they provide us in return."
