Auburn crushes Okolona behind

Auburn won Game Two in the state Babe Ruth softball tournament 15-1 over Louisville Okolona Thursday. The offense was powered by Amiyah Collier, who went four for four, with two singles and two home runs, and Hailey Collins' bases clearing triple. Collier pitched two shutout innings to get the win. Addie Mosier picked up the save. Coach Joseph Jenkins says, "These girls came to play today! We did what we came to do. We are not finished!"

Auburn Babe Ruth wins

Auburn's 12U softball team won its all-important state Babe Ruth tournament opener in Louisville Thursday 10-1. According to Coach Joseph Jenkins, Lilly Newman hit a grand slam in the second inning to ignite the offense. Kayleigh Sweeney pitched the win, Amiyah Collier picked up the save.

Auburn Babe Ruth 12U All-Stars will represent Logan County in the Kentucky Babe Ruth State Tournament in Louisville’s Fern Creek Park Thursday through Sunday. Jackson's Orchard returning

 to local market Thursday

The Kentucky Wonders Garden Market will begin its summer run this Thursday at noon. Jackson's Orchard will bring peaches to Russellville for sale as long as they last. Vegetables, herbs and other garden produce will also be available. The market is located at Fellowship Church of Christ at the corner of 4th and Franklin streets in front of the old hospital. This will continue on Thursdays as long as Jackson's Orchard has fruit to sell here.

Cancer claims life of radio personality Scooter Davis

Long-time WBVR morning personality Scooter Davis of Russellville died Friday morning after a long battle with cancer. He had continued doing his morning show on The  Beaver until nearly the end. Scooter, whose birth name was Thane Austin, announced on WRUS on June 16, 2015 that he had terminal cancer and had been given a year to live. Many members of the staff of WRUS and of The Beaver when it was headquartered in Russellville gathered last summer for a reunion that was also an opportunity for many of those who live out of the area to say good-bye. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Lauren Burnett adding to her sports at Campbellsville

Recent Logan County High School graduate Lauren Burnett has previously committed to play soccer for Campbellsville University. Now she has added one or two more teams, depending on how it's viewed. Burnett, who finished third in the state in the Class 3A discus throw recently, will also throw for both the indoor and outdoor track teams when the Tigers' soccer season ends. LCHS teammates Bre Baptiste & Emma Cartas will join Burnett on the CU soccer team. Russellville's DevonYa Bryant will play basketball for the Lady Tigers.

Westerfield to speak at GOP meeting for women

The Logan County Republican Women's Club will meet on June 28, 5:30 p.m. at GOP Headquarters, Russellville. An American Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on Carrico Park Square at the beginning of the meeting. Sen. Whitney Westerfield will be a guest speaker. Gus Herbert, representative from Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles' office, will also be a guest speaker. Other guests will include members of the Teen Republican Club, who will receive a $100 donation from LCRWC. Light refreshments will be served. Questions? Call 270 726 3801 or 270 725 9100.

Quartet of Lady Cougars to play in

national v-ball tourney in Orlando

Four current and former Logan County Lady Cougar volleyball team members are scheduled to play in the AAU National Volleyball Tournament this weekend as part of the Audubon Volleyball Association program. The former Lady Cougar is Sierra Morrow, who will begin playing for Kentucky Wesleyan College this fall. She is a member of the 18-year-old Cyclones. Twins Karrah and Hannah Cron are on different teams. Hannah Cron plays for the 15-year-old Vortex team. Karrah Cron and Lady Cougar teammate Kerra Cornist play for 16-year-old Hurricanes. There is some concern, however, since the tournament is being played in Orlando, which has been the center of attention for violence the past week.

SKYCTC’s free SKY CAM Camp, highlighting careers in advance manufacturing, still has openings for the week of June 20 – 24 in Bowling Green. Taleia Mason to play pair of sports at Wesleyan

Taleia Mason, did several thing well during her days at Logan County High School. The SKYCTC Player of the Game in a Lady Cougar win at the regional basketball tournament as a junior, she made it to state in track this year as a sprinter. She ran for Coach Greg Howard's Lady Panthers at state, and she helped Coach Finley's Baird's win three straight district championships. Friday at 2 p.m. at LCHS, she will sign to play both basketball and track for Kentucky Wesleyan College. The public is invited to attend, Howard says.

Bridge replacement underway near Schochoh

A bridge project on KY 664 in Logan County has closed a section of the roadway near Berea Church Road and created a detour. The detour utilizes U.S. 431 and KY 663. The closure is expected to last until July 27.

Food service provider offers jobs at Logan jail

Elizabethtown-based Kellwell Food Management has contracted to provide food service at the Logan County Detention Center. Kellwood is now hiring food service workers for full and part time positions in. Applicants must be able to pass a drug screen and background check. Paul Mullins to be next Logan superintendent

If all goes as expected, former Lewisburg principal Paul Mullins will be named the next superintendent of Logan County Schools at tonight's board meeting. He was the board's choice after an extensive screening and interviewing process as the replacement for Dr. Kevin Hubs, who is leaving after June 30 to become superintendent of the Scott County Schools. Mullins has also been principal of Caverna and LaRue County high schools and is currently superintendent of Garrard County Schools.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet to be held Saturday

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP Branch will sponsor the 38^th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Sportsman Club at City-County Park on Saturday, June 11 at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Eileen Coleman, human resources director of Champion DogStar Kitchens. NAACP President William Woodard says scholarships will be awarded to Rachel Noelle Hines of LCHS and Saleah Gabrielle Elliott & James Colby Nichols, both of Russellville.

Logan Farmers' Market to open Saturday

From Logan County Farmers' Market President Jenn Dana: "We have an opening day scheduled Saturday, and we are going to celebrate! We are all excited to see our customers again for the season! The 4-H kids will be selling a hot dog lunch that day, there will be an activity for your kids to do, and we will be giving away two prizes that day! Melissa Bryson named Rookie of the Year

Logan County High School graduate Melissa Bryson has been named Rookie of the Year by Stryker Corporation, a Michigan-based medical devices and equipment manufacturing firm. Stryker operates on a national basis and is a leader in orthopedic medical technology. She sold over $4 million of Stryker Products in her first full-year as an account executive. Wednesday, she became the company’s Certified Field Trainer for the South Area. She lives in Atlanta. A graduate of WKU with a degree in marketing and sales, she is the daughter of Dr. Georgia Bryson of Logan County.
