F-S beats Cougars 7-4 for regional title
Not until Franklin's Rylan Thomas caught Kaleb Justice's bid for a tying 3-run homer at the rightfield wall Wednesday evening was the Fourth Region Baseball championship decided. After trailing Logan County 3-0 entering the fourth inning, Coach Kyle Gammons' Wildcats dominated the final four innings on the way to a 7-4 win. Sophomore Dylan Penick pitched no-hit shutout ball for three innings, but the Cats started getting to him in the fourth. Penick pitched into the seventh inning before giving way to Nick Wooden. Franlin reliever Zack Sliger then pitched no-hit relief ball for four innings and teammates Jackson Caudill, Jacob Curtis, Jordan Jones and Hunter Janes started hitting the ball well. The Cougars mounted a threat in the seventh with hits by Jack Wright, Austin Rayno and Jackson Campbell. Then came the long ball by Justice, who had doubled in the first inning, but it was just a little short.

Lady Cougars fall 3-0 in softball regional
Barren County ended Logan County's softball season by a 3-0 score Monday at WKU. Coach Brandy Trimble's team, which had no player older than a sophomore, finished with a 13-14 record. The Trojanettes (21-8) will now play Warren East, a 15-0 winner over Cumberland County Monday. South Warren and Allen County-Scottsville, which eliminated 13th District champ Franklin-Simpson 9-1, will play in the other semifinal.

Cougars romp to win, head to Tuesday semifinals
With identical 10-0 wins in Monday's opening round of the Fourth Region Tournament, Logan County (23-10) and Russell County (22-12) at WKU's Nick Denes Field, the two perennial powerhouses set up a semifinal matchup Tuesday at 5 p.m. After Russell County's Brayton Scales pitched a 3-hit, 2-walk, 10-run, 5-inning domination of Greenwood (17-20) in the opener (Scales also doubled twice as the Lakers' leadoff hitter), Logan's D.J. Beard crafted a 5-hit, 1 walk, shutout of Barren County (14-15). Kaleb Justice got Logan's only extra base hit, a double, and drove in 4 runs. Third Bell singled twice. Also getting hits were Austin Rayno, Nick Wooden, Jack Wright, Koby Wall, Dylan Penick and Beard. Bell had 2 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Jackson Campbell walked twice. Franklin-Simpson and Warren East also won in shutouts and will meet in Tuesday's second game.

Hines and Hendricks named track academic all-staters

These two met the requirements of having competed at state and earning a GPA of 3.75 or higher. Congratulations, Jessica and John for being great, on and off the track!

Franklin teams beat Logan
in both diamond district finals
Franklin-Simpson softball and baseball players had been looking forward to a chance to get revenge against Logan County teams. They got it Tuesday night in the championship games of the 13th District diamond tournaments at Russellville. The Lady Kats were beaten 13-2 by the Lady Cougars on April 25, but they were without star pitcher Madison Davis that day. Davis struck out 10 Lady Cougars in a come-from-behind 6-3 win in the championship game. That overshadowed a spectacular outing for Logan freshman Brea Croslin, who hit two solo homers plus a single off Davis, and also threw out one potential tying runner with catcher Kennedy Nichols making a tough tag.
In baseball, the Logan County Cougars had beaten F-S twice behind the dominant pitching of junior southpaw Ethan Smock. Franklin players were hoping, however, that Smock would pitch against them one more time because they had so much experience batting against him. They got their wish. They scored six runs against him in the first two innings and went on to win the championship by a 9-0 score. Winning pitcher Rylan Thomas and Jackson Caudill homered for the Cats.
All four teams will advance to next week’s regional tournaments at WKU.

Lady Cougars to meet F-S
in district softball finals again
The Logan County Lady Cougars will try to defend their 2016 13th District championship Tuesday night when they play Franklin-Simpson in the 2017 finals Tuesday at Russellville. Coach Brandy Trimble's team eliminated Todd Central 15-5 in six innings Monday. Watch The LoJo for details. Franklin broke open a close game late to beat the Lady Panthers 5-0 in the nightcap. Lady Kat pitcher Madison Davis threw a 2-hitter against RHS, striking out 11 and walking none. Ally Pendleton and Jessie Bellar led the F-S offense. The two hits Davis allowed were to Tonisha Hampton & Cierra Collins to lead off the RHS sixth, but Davis struck out Lilly Newman and Tara Gilbert while getting Brooklyn Ray to ground out to smother Russellville's only scoring threat. Seniors Macy Meacham, Tiffany Gray, Madison Keezel, Gilbert &Collins saw their high school careers come to an end.

Franklin ends RHS baseball season
The Franklin-Simpson Wildcats ended the baseball season of the Russellville Panthers by an 8-4 count in the 13th District Tournament at Kelly Russell Field Monday. No results or statistics for the Panthers are ever reported. Seniors who have played without any recognition the past three years include Brennan Hughes, T.K. Hampton and Evan Humphrey along with Campbellsville University signee Jordan Blick. As is the case most years, Franklin will face the Logan County Cougars in Tuesday's championship game at RHS.

Kennedy Nichols first team all-region,
Brae Croslin and Tara Gilbert honored
Three players from the Land of Logan have been honored for their softball excellence this season. Logan County catcher Kennedy Nichols, a freshman who started for Coach Brandy Trimble's Lady Cougars last year as an Adairville eighth grader, was named first-team All-Region. Her classmate, shortstop Brea Croslin, was named honorable mention All-Region, as was Russellville pitcher Tara Gilbert. Croslin and Gilbert were Russellville starters when Croslin was a fifth grader before Crosln transferred to the Logan County School System as a sixth grader before the 2014 season. Also honored from the 13th District were Franklin-Simpson senior outfielder Jessie Beller on the first team and F-S eighth grader Mackenlie Webb as honorable mention. Logan County plays Todd Central and Russellville meets Franklin in the district tournament at RHS Monday.

Jaylyn McMurry wins state track title
Russellville senior Jaylyn McMurry capped one of the best overall sports years in Russellville history Saturday by winning the Class A 400-Meter championship at the University of Kentucky with a time of 49.66 seconds. Also this year McMurry quarterbacked the Panthers to the Final Four in football and was the second best player (behind consensus all-stater Pedro Bradshaw) on the basketball team which reached the All A state Final Four and the overall regional finals against the team which won the state championship. He was named to the All-Region basketball team. The Panther boys track coach is Mikie Benton.

The featured speaker this month is Dr. Damon Eubank, history professor from Campbellsville University. He will be speaking about his book In the Shadow of the Patriarch: The John J. Crittenden Family in War and Peace. Sen. Crittenden and his family were one of Russellville's most distinguished families in politics and war. Ribbon cutting set Friday for Southern Ego catering and food truck
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for Southern Ego Catering and its new food truck Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fourth Street Theater in Russellville. Jessica Atkinson has operated the catering business for several years and has added a food truck to make meals accessible to more customers. She will have a variety of foods available for sale from 11-2 surrounding the special event Friday.

State Farm to present texting and driving event for LCHS students today
State Farm insurance agent Amanda Gossett has organized the creation of a mock car crash in conjunction with the Russellville Police Department and the Logan County Emergency Medical Service to bring awareness to Logan County High School students about texting and driving. Clay Bilyeu of Clay's Auto Body s providing a wrecked vehicle for the demonstration, The presentation will be this afternoon as the students are leaving school.

Russellville Lions Club honors
Bradshaw, senior Panthers
On Thursday, May 4, the Russellville Lions Club held its meeting at the Colonial Inn and hosted the Russellville High School Panther senior basketball players. Russellville Panther All-State selection and Belmont University basketball signee Pedro Bradshaw has been selected to play in the Annual Kentucky/Indiana All-Star Basketball Classic. The game will be played Sunday, June 11, at 4 p.m. (EDT) at the Frankfort Convention Center. The Lions Club has chosen to recognize the team, fund them a two-night stay, and sponsor a full-page ad in the program when Bradshaw participates in the game. The senior players attending the monthly meeting were Bradshaw, Paul Jones, Shon Kees, Deshawn Mason, Jaylyn McMurry, and Micah Naylor. Congratulations, Panthers!

RHS students in WKU programs tour university
Russellville High School students from Upward Bound/Talent Search recently experienced a field trip to Western Kentucky University for a campus tour and college fair. The following students were able to attend: Upward Bound Students - Titiana Day, Lyndsay Dodson, Madison Morrow, Javaren Robey, Tajada Hampton, Ti’Jara Hunt, and Ashley Young. Educational Talent Search students - Dilishia Thomas, Denise Stovall, Chelsea Clinard, Latavia Boyd, Caitlin Ross, Rachel Lewis, Brianna Bellamy, and Dre Woodard. Both Upward Bound and Talent Search programs provide support foundations for high school students. It is a year-round program designed to improve students' academic and study skills in high school, to develop their career and educational plans, and to help them enter and succeed in higher education.

From GoRacers.com about Murray State's punter, who is a graduate of Logan County High School: Landon Stratton returns for the 2017 season as a Redshirt Junior. The punter out of Russellville, Kentucky has racked up over 5,311 total punting yards in two seasons, netting 2,710 in this past season. His per game average of 41.7 yards ranked him 21st nationally and fourth in the OVC amongst other punters. Stratton said, "Overall, I think the spring is going to be productive for us. Between the offseason and now we have put in countless hours of work. I think this spring will show that and it will carry over into the fall." Special teams coordinator Jake Johnson said, "Landon is a very natural punter. The kid has a lot of confidence about himself back there; it takes a lot to get him rattled. He has a big time leg and does a lot of good things out there for us."

Auditions for Jungle Book for Kids next week
"The Jungle Book - for Kids" will be this summer's Russellville Arts Council Youth Drama Camp production for kids finishing second through eighth grades this school year. Raye Barlett, guidance counselor at Stevenson Elementary School, will be the director. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, May 16,, and Thursday, May 18, from 3 to 6 pm at the Stevenson library. The camp will be held at Russellville High School from June 5-10 (performances on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night). Crowning of Senior Miss Moneypenny gets Strawbery Festival started
Alexis Leah Moneypenny was named Strawberry Festival Senior Miss at the annual pageant Tuesday. Lydia Manley and Clair Wilson placed second and third, respectively. The 71st Festival continues Saturday with the Car, Truck and Tractor Show on the Adairville Public Square. The majority of the festival will be next weekend with Casey's Rides. Charlotte Brindley's presentation on the Hite house, the parade, concerts and dances, the baby show, and the reenactment of the Jackson-Dickinson Duel.

John Hendricks wins Bluegrass Cellular contest
From counselor David Brooks: Logan County High School is proud to announce John Hendricks as the winner of the Bluegrass Cellular #ThinkBeforeYouType Column Contest. The contest is an attempt to increase awareness of the problems of cyberbullying and its impact. John wrote an essay in which he was to discuss safe smartphone habits and relate those habits to cyberbullying. John’s essay will be published on Bluegrass Cellular’s website. John is currently a sophomore at LCHS. He is a member of the school’s Cross Country and Track teams and is a member of the LCHS Youth Leadership Logan team, BETA, Student Council and is Junior Vice President of the school’s FFA Chapter. His parents are Joe and Kaye Hendricks of Russellville.

Bart Flener named new Russellville superintendent
Highly successful basketball coach and experience central office administrator Bart Flener was unanimously elected Monday to be the next superintendent of Russellville Independent Schools, WRUS News reports. Flener is currently assistant superintendent of Murray Independent Schools. He also served as boys basketball coach at Murray, where he compiled a 69-29 record. His Tigers were regional runner-up in his first season and then won the First Region the following season. That 2015-16 team won its first game at state and finished with a 30-6 record. Flener also coached the Glasgow Scotties in the early years of this century. He will succeed Leon Smith, who is retiring at the end of this school year as Russellville superintendent.

Justice, pitchers lead Cougars to
wins over BGH, South Warren
Kaleb Justice out on a power show and Dylan Penick, Ethan Smock and Nick Wooden pitched wins in a pair of impressive wins against District 14 powerhouses Monday and Tuesday. Penick pitched eight innings of shutout ball and Justice hit a grand slam in the first extra inning Monday as Coach Ethan Meguiar's team beat Bowling Green 4-0 Monday. Then Tuesday Justice had six RBIs in the Cougars' 17-10 win over South Warren Tuesday. Smock pitched the first five innings and Wooden the fnal two frames. Jackson Campbell homered in the game and Austin Rayno was among many with big hits. This comes on the heels of two outstanding pitching performances by D.J. Beard. Russellville board may choose superintendent Monday
A new superintendent could be chosen for the Russellville School System Monday. The board of education will conduct a special called meeting at the Central Office Monday, beginning at 6 p.m. The board will go into closed section to "discuss personnel." Then in open session the five members may "consider candidate for superintendent," according to the notice sent to the media.

Friends of the Library flower sale coming up
From Elaine Ezell: The annual Friends of the Library flower sale will be held at the Logan County Public Library on Friday, May 12. There will be a variety of hanging baskets plus small pots of begonias, gerber daisies, and geraniums. It is a great opportunity to choose a flowering plant for Mother’s Day or to brighten the day for a grandmother, neighbor, friend, or just to add color to your own life. The flower pots will be beautifully decorated and ready for giving to that special someone. Hanging baskets will be priced at $12.50 and the smaller flower pots will range from $3 - $5. Flowering plants provide beauty throughout the spring and summer season. All plants were grown locally in Logan County. Proceeds from the sale will be used by the group to benefit the library supporting children and adult programming. Last fall the Friends in cooperation with the Library funded the Community Reads program which focused on Logan County native Alice Dunnigan.
