Adairville, Auburn, Chandlers and Lewisburg Elementary/Middle Schools will participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. CEP allows schools and school districts the ability to offer both lunch and breakfast at no cost to all enrolled students without the burden of collecting household applications for free and reduced price meals.
CEP is part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law by President Barack Obama in December 2010. All households in these four schools will have to complete a Household Information Form, which they will receive the first day of the 2017-18 school year. These forms should be returned to the school cafeteria manager.
To qualify for CEP a school or a school district must have 40 percent of their student body identified as: Homeless, Migrant, Foster or the household receives food stamps or Medicaid. Although Olmstead Elementary/Middle School and Logan County High School qualify, the percentage of these identified students is not high enough at this time for them to participate in CEP. Both Olmstead and Logan County High will continue to collect household applications for all households interested in applying for free or reduced price meals. Household applications shall be given to all students in these two schools the first day of the 2017-18 school year.
In addition to Olmstead and Logan County High collecting household applications the lunch prices at these two schools will increase for the 2017-18 school year. The increase is due to a federal regulation within the Heathy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Annually each spring the local school district must assess its meal prices per a federal calculator that sets the increase in meal prices. The 2017-18 Lunch meal prices for Olmstead School is $2.25; for Logan County High $2.35. Breakfast at both schools will remain $1.15 while reduced price breakfast is 30 cents and reduced price lunch is 40 cents.
The Board of Education is hopeful that the student participation at those schools involved in CEP will increase during the 2017-18 school year so that Olmstead and Logan County High will be able to participate in CEP for the 2018-19 school year.
