Lady Cougars win district coin flip for top seed, brackets revealed

It’s official: Logan County will be the number one seed in both divisions of the 13^th District Tournament, which will begin in nine days at LCHS. The Lady Cougars and Cougars will wear their home colors on their own floor, squaring off against fourth-seeded Franklin-Simpson in both games on Monday, Feb. 19.

The Lady Cougars (18-9, 5-1) and Todd Central’s Lady Rebels (12-12 , 5-1) had tied for the top spot in the girls, with the lone losses coming to each other.

A coin flip was necessitated at Saturday morning’s district meeting. “We used a Centennial coin, representing 100 years of basketball in Kentucky,” says LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard, the tournament manager.

Lady Cougar Coach Finley Baird had the honors, and called tails. Tails it was!

The Lady Cougars will play the Lady Cats (5-23, 0-6) that Monday at 6:30.

Now Todd is the number two seed and will play the much improved Russellville Lady Panthers (4-17, 2-4) Tuesday, Feb. 20. RHS earned the number two seed with a regular season sweep of Franklin’s girls.

Winners will advance to Thursday’s championship game at 7 p.m. and the Fourth Region Tournament the following week.

The boys’ draw was much simpler. We’ve known for a couple of weeks that the same two matchups will be played on the same nights.

The Cougars (13-13, 5-1) will play F-S (6-19, 1-5) at 8. p.m. on that Monday. Number two seed Todd Central (15-11, 4-2) will take on Russellville (7-16, 2-4).

Two of Franklin’s five wins have been by three points each over the Cougars. One came in double overtime in a tournament, which didn’t count on district standings.
