Coach Finley Baird and her Logan County Lady Cougars got the perfect draw for the upcoming Fourth Region Basketball Tournament next week at Diddle Arena.
Logan (21-10) will play the team with the worst record in the tournament, Metcalfe County (10-16), in the second game Monday at Diddle Arena. Metcalfe is the 16th District runner-up, having lost 70-40 in the district finals to a Russell County team which is the defending regional champion.
There’s more to be pleased about. First, they play on Monday night, which could give them four days to rest for Friday’s semifinal.
Even more importantly, the Lady Cougars drew into the opposite bracket from 14th District champion South Warren. The other teams in Logan’s bracket, Barren County and Coach Calvin Head’s Bowling Green Lady Purples, are both very good, but South Warren is ranked in the top five in the state.
Todd Central, which lost decisively to Logan in the 13th District finals, is the hard-lck team which has to play South Warren first. That is a tough task.
There was good news for Todd Central Athletics otherwise, however. Coach Frank Johnson’s Rebels beat Franklin-Simpson 63-51 in Friday’s 13th District boys championship game. Todd will open regional play Wednesday against 15th District runner-up Monroe County. The Franklin boys will play Russell County.
The girls championship game will be Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Lady Cougars are the only team from the Land of Logan still playing. Both of Russellville’s teams and the Logan County Cougars lost their opening games in the district tournament.
