The 2019-20 girls basketball season in the Land of Logan began on a winning note this week with both the Russellville Lady Panthers and the Logan County Lady Cougars posting victories.

Lady Panthers 54, Warren Central 35

Coach Cameron Jackson’s RHS team relied on youth on the way to a 54-35 domination of Warren Central Tuesday.

Sophomore post player Anastasia Dowlen—one of the top rebounders in the state the last two years—made a bid to lead the state this year with 21 boards. Also impressive was the improvement of her shooting. She not only hit 6 of 11 field goal attempts but also canned all four of her free throw attempts, giving her 16 points.

Freshman Amiyah Collier hit 7 of14 field goals, including 7 of 11 from two-point range. In addition to the 14 points, she was second in rebounding with five.

Jordin Morris and Jayla Kees each hit both of their free throw attempts.

Brinley Mason scored 9 points, and Morris, Kees and Kryslyn Underwood 5 each. Macaria Hines added 3 points.

Lady Cougars 63, Ohio County 55

The three returning starters—all seniors--led the way for Coach Finley Baird’s winners in their 63-55 win over Ohio County.

Peyton Vanzant went 2 for 5 from long-range and was the top scorer with 14. The rest of the team struggled by going 2 for 14 from the 3-point line.

Her twin sister, Paige Vanzant, scored 13 points and was second in rebounding with 5.

Center Kennedy Nichols scored 11 points and pulled down 10 boards for a double-double. She hit 4 of 5 field goal attempts.

Also shooting well were varsity newcomers Keira Costello (3 for 3) and Kadyn Costello (3 for 5). They finished with 6 points each.

Also scoring were Gracie Christian and Addie White with 5 points here and Abby Hinton with 3. Every Lady Cougar who played scored.
