Lady Panthers powerful in paint while beating Todd

The  Russellville Lady Panthers took control of the area in and around the lane Friday on the way to a 60-48 district win over visiting Todd Central.

Coach Ryan Davenport’s team dominated the boards by a 38-21 count, hit 14 of 20 free throws, and hit almost 50 percent (23 of 48) from two-point range.

Junior center Anastasia Dowlen hit 11 of 18 shots on the way to 22 points, and she also had 11 rebounds, which was typical of her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Chloe Whitescarver added 12 points and 6 rebounds. She hit 6 of 6 free throws and 3 of 5 two-pointers.

Lareesha Cawthorne gave her team a huge lift off the bench , scoring 11 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. She often came through with a goal when Todd started make a comeback.

Amiyah Collier and Macaria Hines each scored 6 points. They both hit 3 of 4 free throws, and Collier pulled down and ran down 8 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers built a huge lead early. When Whitescarver hit a pair of free throws, RHS led 15-2 with 1:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Todd’s Lucy Chester hit a pair of free throws and Abby Williams sank a 3-pointer to make the lead 15-7 after a quarter. The Lady Rebels got as close as 17-12, but Cawthorne gave the Lady Panthers a big lead again. She scored 8 points in one minute to make the bulge 38-18.

Todd drew as close as 11 at 52-41 with 6:15 remaining, but the visitors couldn’t catch up.

Williams hit a pair of 3 -pointers and led Todd with 17 points. Chester had 12 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. Clara Collins and Jamaia Coleman each added a three-pointer while Jayla Leavell and Alexis Taylor each had 5 rebounds.
