Defense has been the asset the Logan County Lady Cougars have built their season around. Until Friday, good defense had not been enough for them to get a win. This time, however, stinginess was a virtue. The Lady Cougars held visiting Todd Central under 30 points in a 43-28 district win.
The win was not only the first of the season for LCHS, but it was also the icebreaker for former Lady Cougar standout player Dedra ‘DK’ Adler, who scored her inaugural victory as her alma mater’s head coach.
Todd Central started strong, building an early 8-4 lead. Their top scorer, Lucy Chester, picked up two early fouls, however, making a Logan County comeback more likely.
The Lady Cougars turned things around, outscoring the Lady Rebels 16-6 the remainder of the half.
A big moment came in the third quarter when Abby Hinton—Logan’s most experienced player and usually an effective shooter—scored on an assist from Emerson McKinnis to make the lead 29-18. Hinton has been in a multi-game scoring slump, but she broke out for 12 points, mostly in the closing run.
Gracie Borders led the Lady Cougars with 13 points, and Kadyn Costello tied Hinton with 12. On two-point field goal attempts, those three were exceptional. Costello hit 5 of 6, and Borders and Hinton each 3 of 4. The Lady Cougars were 12 of 23 as a team. Borders hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hinton added another.
Gracie Borders also was the rebounding leader with 7 while Emily Borders added 5.
Chester finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds for Todd Central while Abby Williams, who hit her team’s only 3-pointer, added 7 points. Alexis Taylor had 6 points and 7 rebounds. The Lady Rebels shot only two free throws, hitting one.
